Ok, just as a pre-warning. This was all written up in pen while away from a computer. I didn't want to lose the idea. In the spur of the moment, I may have rambled, made typos, and most likely made my handwriting illegible. I hope I can explain the idea to it's full extent. Also, mind the 15 degree test slant >.< My fault.
We change the way chunks are defined and loaded to increase the height limit as well as to increase performance by lessening the size of chunks being loaded/unloaded from RAM.
This may allow for a REAL skyland? floating islands at Y500? Plausible planes? because without a height limit we could fly to our height's desire. This is all "spur of the moment" and due to my lack of how the per-chunk basis is set up (as well as lack of java), I have no idea if this would work or not. But it's a suggestion!
So comment, [constructively] criticize, and add on to this!
and I'd like to remind forum goers that posting "There's a mod for that" either on its own or as a reason to quash an idea without contributing to the suggestion itself is against forum rules.
And I did neither.

It's hard criticizing ideas when one is tired, so you'd better appreciate it when I criticize yours.
My only problem with this idea is falling through the ground. For people with lower-end computers, there would be problems with falling from tall heights. If they fall faster than chunks load below them, they wouldn't collide with the ground. D:
I've seen a thread about this before, and that was the only problem anyone could see.

You better watch closely, or these words just might turn into a juggling squirrel...
It would be great to build up to crazy hights and with this the underground could also be significantl bigger. My only question though is why 32x32x32 chunks instead of 16x16x16.

Arrival of Darkness, Darker yet recognizable textures.
genious, now this could even help mojang start working on skyblock world types natural generation, only problem, desert biome lol, u dig 2 deep & the whole island falls into the void, but then that is what the 32x32x32 chunks would help with, giving plenty of room for sandstone, if we can get a hold of enough obsidian though, would the nether be fully formed(attached)? also, this would help prevent people from using chunk load errors to find diamonds way too easily
