Before you just start spamming the comments with "Oversuggested!" and "Lolfail check search bar noob", just hear me out.
Zombies, are zombies. They bite people? Those people turn into zombies. Not in Minecraft, where zombies magically spawn without a reason. People like excitement and fear. That's why there is fear of Zombies in the first place. So, instead of zombies KILLING you and villagers, after 5 bites to a villager (Or after however many bites it needs to kill you) they/you become a zombie.
Let's just say for the sake of me not googling a bunch of things, zombies need 5 bites to kill you. So, after the first bite, you just take some damage. After the second bite, some green is spotted around your screen here and there. After the third and fourth bites, your screen becomes more green. After the fifth bite, you die and respawn.
If you come back to the location you "turned" at, you will (possibly) find the zombie that killed you, and your new animated corpse. (Any armor you were wearing will be seen on the corpse, but will not have any effect on the zombie itself and if you kill it, the armor is fine.)
As for villagers, it's the same thing except there are visible signs of changing. Such as, after the first bite, an arm turns green. Second bite, a leg. Third bite, other arm, and fourth bite, other leg. Fifth bite, the villager is a zombie completely.
The only way to cure a villager-zombie would be to give them milk (Hey, another use for milk!) otherwise, you would have to kill them.
Now, if you get bitten 4 times and manage to kill the zombie, you must drink milk in order to completely restore yourself. Milk will not work on your animated corpse OR any naturally spawning zombie.
This would add more danger to zombies (They are pretty much seen as easy kills nowadays) and would make people more cautious to attempt and fight one.
Now villages need better defense. There should be an iron golem for every 5 villagers (Once a 5th child is born, a new iron golem appears, if that child dies, the iron golem stays) Because seriously, 15 member villages are hard to find. This would provide more security from seiges.
Seiges should also now occur 5x more often, and maybe with 2 skeletons and a spider jockey among the zombie hoard.
This entire suggestion would also explain why humans are very hard to find. Maybe a zombie apocalypse started a long time ago and killed off most humans, leaving stupid testificates as the children of these humans?
And in SMP, possibly (This is probably way too complicated, but would be REALLY cool) if there are a couple players hanging around an area long enough, a seige pops up and attacks that area? I cannot find any person that could disagree with that. If you do, please explain why.
I would like some constructive criticism. This is NOT perfect and I know some of you hate the zombie genre and think it has gotten old, but it has nothing to do with that. This is about adding danger to zombies and making minecraft better. If you disagree, please to not post something about how you don't think it needs to be added because you magically know what Minecraft needs. Explain the actual PROBLEMS of why it shouldn't be added.
Thank you for reading this. =DUgh gtg for now. I won't be responding to any posts in about 15 mins
I think this is pretty cool, and I would love to come back to where I died and see myself zombified and walking around.
I think 5 villagers for getting an iron golem is a little too few tho, I think the higher number is there for a reason so that the towns aren't so easily protected by an iron golem.

That higher number is 15. I don't usually go and find villages, but when I do, I usually see around 6-10 of them. Not 15. Ever.

If it has been suggested a lot, then maybe, just maybe, it should be implemented because obviously a lot of people want it.
I understand that it is up there and naturally finding that many is nearly impossible. But Since you can build houses and such in the town to help spawn more villagers, If the number of villagers needed to spawn an iron golem was lowered to say, 10, then you could build up the town and spawn a few additional villagers to meet that level. As you said, you usually find towns with 6-10 so by your original standard of 5 for an iron golem, you would almost always find a town with an iron golem already present.
I'm all for adding difficulty and harder mechanics, but this adds neither. This does not make zombies harder to kill or more dangerous, it just makes them more annoying when they do kill you, which is not a great mechanic.
Also the more frequent sieges which you say are to add difficulty are completely nullified by the tripling the amount of iron golems. More frequent sieges or no, this would make it way too easy.
Finally, the zombie infection mechanic would just annoy players and we would see plenty of rage on these forums about this new mechanic.
In movies and games and stuff, it is not the threat of being turned into a zombie that the people are afraid of, whether they are killed or simply infected by the zombies, the fear is the same.
For me, it is the sheer volume of them. The army of relentless monsters banging on your door, that cannot be reasoned with or ever truly escaped. They have no fear and will chase you down until you can run no more.
If you want to make zombies more of a threat, the method is simple. Simply make them spawn in larger volumes, when they do spawn, on the higher difficulties.
Instead of facing a lone zombie in a cave every so often, you now face 4-5 on normal, and possibly 7-10 on hard. With large volumes of zombies it suddenly becomes a lot more difficult to take them all down easily.
That's all you need to do to make zombies harder, all that infection stuff is unnecessary.
