So as of 1.3 servers can force texture packs upon the clients, which is GREAT!!
BUT, it's possible to turn it OFF.
And that sucks.
So my suggestion, is that there is no OFF button. Which makes a server capable to force a texture pack on the client, no matter what.
Why would i want this?
Forcing a texture pack on the client makes it impossible to use a transparent texture pack, so called x-ray texture packs.
Anyone agree?
I think all server administrators would appreciate this possibility. no more cheating. no more base reveal. and great experience on themed servers. like medieval or space themed or whatever.
what's to stop the player altering the texture pack anyway? Since the texture pack must be stored client side he could just open it up and change it.
Would be better it Mojang made it so that Xray texture packs don't work, ie., if a texture is blank for a non-transparent texture, make it black instead of see-through.
This is a far better solution and would allow players to use their own texture pack.
problem is that the blocks arent always blank, but got a single dot or so on.
but i haven't tested anything out, i just assumed the texture pack had to be the same as the server requests, or else it fails. that's at least what i want
I don't really like the idea. I would prefer it that is says before you join the server, that the included texture pack is highly suggested to use, and you can download it from there. Forcing a texture pack just seems... unfair. People couldn't use their favourite texture packs on their favourite servers.
that honestly is the last thing we need! You can't find a freakin minecraft server without it having something you need to download, and then that would just add the small servers that no one knows about to that freaking list!
Also, people can't really cheat on it because the file is downloaded to their client every time they connect to the server (if I am correct). If the server could force a texture pack onto the client, it would make it possible to help go against X-ray.
Firstly only noobs use X-ray texture packs. They are horrible! They use nodus or other X-ray mods.
Forcing me to use a texture pack that I might not want to use would not make me go on that server.
I like the freedom of texture packs and that is that.

I've never once had to download something for a server...

This is a great idea. A lot of people would probably whine about it. And some people would definitely troll with it.
But its a great start to preventing x-raying noobs.
I suggest the admin makes a texture pack Blacklist. So the player has these options:
Use the recommended texturepack
Use your own texture pack, UNLESS it is on the blacklist of the server. If you still try this, you simply won't be able to connect to the server untill you have chosen a 'legal' texturepack.
This would make everyone happy, except the cheaters!
There's a few problems with that, that would be easily bypassed by renaming said texture pack to be on the blacklist; that or it would have to check every image in the texture pack, which would take some time and more processing power. Also, its not that hard to change what data is written to the packet containing the information to easily bypass the check.
In the end its a waste of time to develop that feature.
You wouldn't need to download it, it does so automatically.
and i don't really see the problem with it. Themed servers would be a great experience.
example: Zombie server. a good texture pack makes the experience all the difference.
Would remove the x-rayers.
And i bet the most popular servers would have the option OFF, so most people could use their favorite texture packs.
I, for one want this the most. i want to make a themed server, with no x-rayers.
That's still downloading it... The only thing different between that and what I assume you think downloading is, that you didn't click on anything to start it. If you want to make a themed server that blocks x-ray, use bukkit and spout.
I Disagree with this idea entirely. I like choices. I think the forcing of a texture pack on someone should be optional.
Why, you ask?
#1- I love vanilla, and I prefer not to see anything else, becasue the textures are always too light, too dark, too detailed, etc.
#2- I don't want 10 million texture packs crowding up my computer.
Freedom to the Players!

I agree. i LOVE vanilla and i only play vanilla, but i would like an option for my future plans.
And forcing a texture pack doesn't mean it has to be a bad one.... the vanilla texture pack is still a texture pack.
It's not just cheating. If a server map was created with a specific texture pack in mind, it may be necessary for players to use that texture pack to experience it properly. This is especially true on Roleplay servers. So a texture pack force might be needed to not break a map.
Servers need to be able to force the default pack at least, this to stop cheating of course. If you don't like the default pack don't play on servers that use it, it's pretty simple. It's like if I don't want to play a server that uses gun plugins and I don't join that server...
