Iron and gold ore currently drop blocks and because of that, fortune doesn't work on them. Well, I have a solution to this. Basically both gold and iron ores will now drop items instead of blocks.
So you start with this:
And end with this:
Then you can go smelt the items into ingots.
This would:
Allow fortune to work on iron and gold ores
Give silk touch more use
Thanks to Deonyi for making the amazing textures that I used for the iron and gold ore items. They even match the newer style of the textures of Minecraft.
Do you want gold to be more common than diamonds like it's supposed to? Then put this in your signature!
Why fix what isn't broken? The current way causes no problems.

It is an interesting but depressing reality that most politicians are just regular people with power. And most people would be as bad as politicians if only they could get some power.
Realistic but a "meh" idea.
The smelting blocks idea has been around since the ores, though this is a good idea, and brings more obtainable ores for Silk Touch.
Could you be a little more creative with the ore items and make a creative, non-recolored coal like, item?

You know how iron and gold ore drop blocks and because of that, fortune doesn't work on them, and how they don't give you experience. Well, I have a solution to this. Basically both gold and iron ores will now drop items instead of blocks.
So you start with this:
I basically said this in the beginning, but this would:
Allow fortune to work on iron and gold ores
Allow iron and gold to give you exp upon mining
Give silk touch more use
However, I do think smelting exp should be removed as it was primarily added to have gold and iron still give exp. Not so that you could farm exp from cobblestone.
You may wish to correct yourself, as gold and iron DO give experience, they simply must be smelted first. The reason for this is so that you can not simply put the ore block down and then mine it, thus being able to farm XP by breaking/placing one block.
I have an idea that would keep everyone happy. They could possibly make its so that specified blocks are affected by fortune. The exploit could be fixed by, say iron ore, dropping a iron ore block with a different block ID making it so that the dropped block is not affected by fortune, but the generated block is... just a thought.
neverimplement this? Try out this mod by MrIbby!Iron and gold ore currently drop blocks and because of that, fortune doesn't work on them. Well, I have a solution to this. Basically both gold and iron ores will now drop items instead of blocks.

...And what's the problem? This hardly seems like a big deal.

Sounds like the OP fixes that.

Gold is a trophy metal. By all rights, it SHOULD be harder to get.
It's called "context".

i got to agree.

Oh well, I could contribute by allowing you to use my concept arts:
There. You can put them in the OP.
Wow... Even better than mine... You made that?
