Alright this is my first suggestion post on the forum. (so here goes)
My idea simply is to add a space stage to Minecraft. (hear me out though don't shoot me down now)
I know I've gotten to points on one world where I have all the resources I could possibly need and get bored, well if a space stage was added to Minecraft it would expand the game-play opportunities exponentially.
I'm just going to list some of the possible features that come to mind when I think of a space stage for Minecraft:
-Other worlds (would create more opportunities to get more resources and such)
-A ship you can build (and maybe even make it so that people can make different variations of the ship as long as it has all of the necessary components so that people can make bigger better ships later)
-Mining in space(asteroids perhaps), it IS Minecraft after all and it could introduce some new elements for building ships and such to add to the ships
-space suits(so you can mine asteroids if you don't have a mining component on your ship) and space stations(artificial gravity or spinning stations?) so that you can live in space if you choose to do so
-Creeper free expanse, although you would have to add some sort of enemy that is of equal or greater annoying-ness (or not) ;P
-also the possibilities for where you could go are as large as the ship you build, you could hop between galaxies, travel the universe, colonizing planets as you go.
And I think that about sums up my idea, but there can be a ton more stuff added to it too, PvP on servers, start on different worlds, add weapons to ships, space battles, transfer your creations to other servers, the works.
From a programmer standpoint I know this would be a HUGE add on and would take a lot of work but I think it would be worth it in the end and it would be really awesome.
From a business standpoint, I wouldn't mind paying $10 for an alpha version of Spacecraft and I'm sure a lot of other people wouldn't mind either. (we'll see if the name sticks or not) ;P

No! We do not want to change minecraft into a sci fi game. It's too huge of a thing to be added, and I wouldn't like it very much. Mojang can focus on better things. Maybe and I mean MAYBE this could be one of those total conversion DLC's Jeb mentioned, but that's far off in the future.

There's another game called spore, no mining but you can colonize planets, after advancing your race far enough. You can talk to other empires, have space battles, and put stuff you made on the Internet to be in other peoples games. Sounds veeery similar to this.
OT: I don't think this idea is too "modern", as minecraft doesn't really have a time period. Redstone can be used to make COMPUTERS. No, it just doesn't fit minecraft. In a game where the primary weapons are bows and swords, and the most advanced technology is powered rails and pistons, building spaceships and mining asteroids doesn't fit very well. Minecraft seems to be taking more of a magical than technological step right now, with brewing, enchanting, teleporting enemies and portals to other dimensions.
So, in five words: NO IT DON'T FIT IN!!!!!

You better watch closely, or these words just might turn into a juggling squirrel...

Thank you for your constructive feedback, I can see that some people think its too modern and wouldn't fit but I personally think it would be neat, and I've played spore before and it is pretty cool, definitely one of my favorite games and I think that a space stage would be fun but anyways thanks for being the first person to actually say something other than "too modern, no support bla bla bla" it was just a suggestion people, chill out.
And also, I was thinking that maybe it could be some sort of sequel, not an addition.. a separate game so that Minecraft isn't changed because I agree it is more magic based and people don't want it to change so I'm not suggesting you change it, make another game with the same base code.
This has been suggested many times before, and in much greater detail. This thread isn't very unique or different from any of the previous threads on the subject so I'm locking it.

I suggest clarifying on your ideas.

BBCode Render failed due to reaching MaxNestingDepth(80) for Tag: spoiler
I have a better one
I am ninja'd far too often.
I agree that this is far too modern for Minecraft. People should think this stuff through.
@qmcometdude
It already is a mod. In fact I know of 2. They aren't even that good.
