Right now, bookshelves have no purpose other than being used as a decorative block and to increase the level of available enchantments. However, I feel that since 1.3 is introducing writable books, why not STORE the books in something called a Shelf! And, why not store not only books, but other items as well!
Let's begin!
Regular Bookshelves
The recipe for the bookshelves require 3 books and 6 wood planks. I feel that this should still make the regular bookshelf, which serves no purpose except as a decorative block. What? Then how do we store books? With a NEW item.
The New 'Shelf' Item
This item is crafted the same way as a Bookshelf, but without the three books. This Shelf item can be placed like a block. When right-clicked, an menu will appear in which you have three empty spots. Here, you can put any item in it, and when you exit the menu, those items wil be displayed on the shelf! So, it's basically a super small chest, but you can see the items! Adding stacks of an item will only display one of it, of course. Also, enchanted tools will show that mystical glowing effect on them. However, thats not all I came up with!
The Armor Stand
This item serves the purpose of showing off your armor! It would be crafted with three cobblestone on the bottom row, and two sticks in the middle column. (This recipe is from Risugami's Armor Stand mod). Then, when you right click, a menu will appear. There, you will see the Helmet Section, Chestplate Section, Leggings Section, and Boots Section. You put the armor in their spots and BOOM! You're armor is showcased to the world! Also, enchanted armor is shown with the mystical glowing effect as well!
Locks
Locks are an item that you place onto chests. When you craft a Lock, you will obtain the item. Then, with it in hand, you right click a chest, it'll place the lock, and you can not open it. What you need to do to open it is to make a key. When you open the lock and enter the chest on the top of the menu that pops up there will be a button that says Remove Lock. That way, you can take the lock off and anyone can enter the chest.
Keys
When you craft a key, it will open any of YOUR locks you placed on a chest, ender chest, or safe. If you happen to lose the key, do not fear! Making a new one will give you the same key that can open any of your locks. It's basically the Vanilla Minecraft equivalent to the Bukkit plugins Lockette.
That's all I have thought of now! Thanks for reading! I will add more ideas as I come up with them
I like it a lot. Idk if others have suggested similar things but either way it would be nice. Decoration is one of the biggest things lacking in my opinion so these types of things would be nice. Plus it would be a useful way for storing specific items

Sorry but both safes and locks are rendered useless with the implementation of Ender Chests. They are even crafted with obsidian like your safe. They have a separate inventory for each player so nobody could steal from them even if they find your Ender Chest, so your stuff is, pardon the pun, safe anyway.
Oh ya, so Safes are pointless. I removed that. However, locks are to put them on regular chests, as they are probably going to be much more common. Ender Chests are a bit difficult to create, so making a chest and a simple lock and key would be pretty useful.
