THIS THREAD IS FOR BETTER, NOT MORE POWERFULL, VERSIONS OF ALREADY EXISTING ITEMS.
The first of my ideas is actually one that is often suggested, the glowstone torch. It is needed to work some of the other ideas, plus it would be a nice addition to the game.
The first actual upgrade is 'SPIRIT TNT.' it is formed in the same way as normal tnt except with soul sand instead of normal sand. IT IS NOT MORE POWERFUL THAN NORMAL TNT, at least not in explosion size or dammage done. If it kills (not just hurts but actually KILLS) any mob, it will drop twice the normal number of xp orbs and will have a 25% chance of dropping 2x it's normal item drop.
The second upgrade is also for tnt (actually several upgrades are for tnt) and is called light bomb. It is crafted the same way as tnt but with the 4 gunpowder on the corners replaced with glowstone. The explosion size of this tnt is much smaller than normal tnt (only hurts blocks directly touching it) but it will leave behind a block of level 15 light that will slowly fade away. Its main purpose is to light up dark areas like caves just long enough for you to find coal to make torches or to be used with a normal TNT when tnt mining so if you open up a small cave monsters will not suddenly spawn into your mining area and kill you before you can place torches.
The next upgrade is the last for tnt. It is EMP TNT and is crafted like tnt with just the middle gunpowder replaced by redstone. It dosen't do any damage, unless you happen to be a redstone circuit. Any redstone wire (or torch or anything else used for power transmition) in a 25 block radius will intantly shutdown for 1 min. before turning back on. (I suppose that if you wanted you could combine some of these ideas (maybe even all and have the crafting recipe be 4 glowstone at corners, 4 soul sand on the sides, and a redstone middle), but I do not think most people would like that.)
This next idea is the next to last and is one of the more interesting, in my opinion.
If you take 4 glowstone dust and place them on the 4 sides of the crafting space, put 4 glowstone torches onto the corners, and ANY sapling in the middle, it will become a sapling of light. If you plant a sapling of light it will grow into a light tree. The leaves of this tree glow at level 10 light, and the logs glow at level 2 light. The tree only drops normal saplings though, and the leaves will not glow after being harvested, although the logs will. It can also grow on glowstone, making it a tree that is somewhat nether-tolerant.
The last of my ideas involves goloms. It is the size of a snow golom. You take one spirit tnt and put it in the middle of your crafting area, put leaves on the two bottom corners, and an ender pearl on top middle. If you place this it will be a creeper version of a snow golom. It's blast radius is only on the blocks in direct contact, although like normal creepers they can become supercharged, in which case the do the same dammage as a normal creeper. Please leave only nice comments of constructive criticism. If you do not like the idea you may say so, but please do so in a civilized way.
Thank you for your time and please tell me what you think of each idea, not just if you like or dislike them as a whole. I would love some feedback.
P.S. If anyone here makes mods and would like to use any ideas from here please post the mod link here.
Interesting, and creative. However, not entirely logical.
The glowstone torch, for example, sounds completely pointless... Except with 1 higher light radius than normal torches. Considering the difficulty of obtaining glowstone early on, highly inefficient.
The title of the thread is misleading, as you are not requesting items to be upgraded (or a way to upgrade items) but new items created from scratch.
Spirit TNT is an interesting idea with a use for the mostly useless soul sand. HOWEVER, the problem is that mobs killed by TNT tend to not drop stuff, probably because explosions destroy drops and EXP orbs.
The light bomb, while interesting, and possibly useful, your primary example of uses is nonsensical. Glowstone is usually obtained FAR after coal, and if coal is that hard to find, use charcoal. You would not be using GLOWSTONE on your second-or-so night/day.
The EMP TNT would be possibly useful, and while it would be a possible griefing tool in SMP, it would also work as an anti-griefing tool far more effectively. You could also use one as an emergency override for whatever redstone or defenses your house has.
The sapling of light is interesting, but I see no use for it (nether compatability aside, you wouldn't exactly be able to extend your farm)
And I can't honestly see the purpose of a creeper golem.
tl;dr: Awesome, but impractical.
