I came up with something that I thought it will be worth showing:
The other day I was thinking about tool durability, and I came up with a suggestion for them: That for example: A new (just crafted) diamond pick takes, I don“t know, half a second to mine stone; so, I thought why not a almost broken tool takes longer to do its job? (In this example, an almost diamond pick would take 20 seconds to mine obsidian, or other example 5 seconds to mine stone)

While this is an interesting idea, I'd imagine that you'd have to put the current speed at the middle of the durability as opposed to the beginning to avoid the tool becoming too crappy toward the end of its life. Other than that, it would be a pretty nice addition.
They recently made it so that armour doesn't do this any more. It is unlikely that they will change tools to do this.
Also, I don't want this. It may be more realistic, but there comes a point when realism interferes with good gameplay. And I think this is it.
It would give repairing a point (as it currently has literally none at all and shouldn't even be in the game because of it) but...Too real. Black_Drath and Redyoshi said it all.
