Before I launch into the suggestion, I'm going to start with a small disclaimer of sorts. Yes, I know that similar suggestions have been made. I believe that this is unique enough to deserve its own thread. Also, this suggestion is mainly to add new tiers to the current crafting recipes. If you have an idea for a recipe unique to a certain material, please post and I will add it, giving credit of course. So without further ado...
Metallurgy!
To start with, you are going to have to make something I call a "Metallurgical Furnace."
It would be crafted like so:
The Metallurgical Furnace would be set up similarly to a regular furnace, but with three differences; first, it can only be used to smelt metals; second, it would smelt them faster than a regular furnace; and third, it would have 1 fuel slot, 4 input slots, and 1 output slot.
A side suggestion to go along with this is the brick oven, which would be crafted the same way, just replace iron with bricks. It would be set up the same way as the metallurgical furnace, but have 4 output slots as well as 4 input slots, and be only used for food.
Anyways, on to the first metal: Goldensteel! I figured steel would be good to have, but I wanted my suggestion to be unique, and have steel be slightly harder to obtain than most people suggest.
Goldensteel would be made by putting iron and gold in this configuration in the input of the metallurgy furnace. Smelting it will create 3 goldensteel ingots. It would, however, take twice as much time to smelt as any regular metal, thus requiring twice the fuel.
Goldensteel would be more powerful and more durable than iron, but less so than diamond. It would have a higher enchantability then both substances, but not as much as gold. It would be used for any recipe that currently uses iron, with the exception of the metallurgical furnace. Minecarts made using goldensteel would have a higher top speed than iron ones, and if you were to use goldensteel instead of iron in the crafting of rails, it would produce 24 rails instead of 16.
For our second and final material, we have Golden Diamonds (Idea from Planetfall666, with some modifications)! It would be made by putting diamonds, gold, and obsidian in the input slots of the metallurgical furnace in the below configuration. Smelting it will take 4 times as long as a regular metal, and would produce a single Golden Diamond.
Kind of expensive, but in my opinion, it's quite worth it, as it is as strong as diamond, and slightly more durable than diamond, and would have the highest enchantability in the game, although only slightly more than gold. It would be only used for tools and armor, however.
So how do you like it? Please use constructive criticism, and no trolls allowed! Have a nice day!
I like the idea. Add some combos for redstone, lapis, or coal, (mostly redstone) and it would be almost perfect. For example, two redstone and two of either gold or iron would make powered gold/iron, blocks of it would transmit power like redstone, and if you were making, say, powered rail, you could use goldstone (gold/redstone) and a stick and not need the redstone.
And, how would weak metal+three strong metal=very strong metal? Make sense it does not.
Gold boosts your health (gold apples and health potions) so I can see it improving the health of items. Or, since iron is the main ingredient, the gold only serves to improve enchantability.
Diasteel is, frankly, a lame name, and overpowered. Instead we should have obsidian-gold, which has durability of iron and enchantability of gold, or even something using emeralds so they aren't just substitutes for coins.
Thanks for the comments everyone! Crtaz, I have played IC, and I don't see how my idea is the same. Slightly similar in crafting, maybe, but not ripped directly. Planetfall, I see your point, and I'm probably going to put a modified version of your idea in the OP, giving credit of course. Thanks again for the comments!
The furnace idea is stolen from Industrial Craft, like exactly as they have it, with the same idea. Not supported due to no credit given.
IndustiralCraft doesn't have any sort of alloy furnace. You're thinking of RedPower. Please accuse people of stealing ideas from the correct mod next time. Furthermore, the Alloy Furnace has nine input slots, not four, and is never used to create anything similar to these metals.

You mean redpower?
