So I was playing Minecraft yesterday. My server made an armory, and we loaded it with all sorts of cool weapons and stuff. Swords, bows...
axes...
Then suddenly, I realized something:
Axes are underpowered!
And no, that's not a bad thing. They should be, they have more use than a sword, and thus do less damage. And they can cut wood things, right? But let's think of the many, many wood things they can be used on:
-Trees
-Planks
Kind of a specific tool, if you think about it :/ so that's what got me thinking. Why not be able to throw axes? Not an entirely new weapon, just be able to chuck them at monsters (with a right mouse click, with about half the range of a typical arrow). They would stick out of the creature and once you kill it, you can retrieve your axe.
Now I kept thinking about this and I thought, "what if someone filled their macro bar with axes? Then it would be kinda overpowered, they could just keep scrolling through their bar and throwing axes at enemies and take 1/9th of the typical damage caused to the weapons.
And that would be unfair!
So possibly, give axes a throw option, but make it cause significantly more damage to the weapon itself. Or maybe also give it a charge time like the bow that wouldn't increase its damage but rather only make it take longer/harder to throw the axe.
Just a suggestion, please discuss and feel free to be critical.
As people have been saying, axes DO beak more than wood and planks, although I see your point, as these are usually the only blocks people use axes on. I do like this idea, though, as it adds more use to a current item rather than adding a new one, and as far as I know hasn't been suggested before.
Well I know it has been suggested before, but I think it's one of those ideas that should be added to the game. However, there are still some problems that need to be addressed with this idea, like balancing it versus the bow. According to the wiki, axes deal 0.5 hearts less damage than a sword, and arrows range from dealing 0.5 -4.5 hearts depending on charge. I'm thinking that if the damage for the axe was kept the same and could be thrown without a charge, then it'd be a balanced addition that would have it's own advantages and drawbacks giving people reasons to use it. Obviously it shouldn't fire as far as a bow, but I'm thinking it should go about 50% as far. Also, unlike arrows, it should drop like a normal item when it hits a mob, as arrows normally disappear, but I think it'd be cool if it still stuck in walls and stuff.
Sword:
+Most DPS
+Most durability (for combat), and item efficiency
+Can be used to block hits
-Melee Range
Bow:
+Most damage per hit (potentially)
+Ranged
-Requires charge
-requires ammo
Axe:
+Both a tool and Weapon
+Can be used for Melee and Ranged attacks
-need to retrieve after being thrown
-less damage than a sword or bow
Now I do think the idea of making it deal more damage when thrown would give more of an incentive to throw it, but at most I'd give it an extra heart of damage.
And obviously world edit could be updated and changed to reflect this. Maybe to a stick or something.

Heck, i'd rather see a lot of completely new weapons. Swords are so cliché.
But the thing is that it would be redundant to have a new weapon that even would have a similar name and appearance to something already in the game, especially when you could very easily add it in with the current gear. It'd be like adding floodgates with some random feature built in when we already have pistons that can handle that just as well now.

It's not a new weapon, it's the normal axe but it has a right-click ability, like the sword has blocking and the bow has a charged attack. That's pretty much it.

Oh, no, I agreed with you, I was pointing that out that the other guy who thought this should've been it's own weapon.

I think they should go farther depending on their matieral
Wood being shortest and Diamond being furthest.
It would be awesome.
Wood, wooden planks, doors, trapdoors, pumpkins, melons, fences and fence gates.
But good idea!

i support, but u dont have to worry bout macros
+support
And giving it a charge mechanic that does nothing but make it harder to throw is ridiculous anyway.
