I like the idea of a few tools only being able to be based off of one material (ie. Shears, fishing rod), and I like the idea of perhaps, alternatives to specific tools with different results. Here are some of my ideas on how this could be achieved:
1. Hammer
The hammer is made from cobblestone and a stick, and is used to mine blocks much faster, however sacrificing some of the blocks in the process.
The hammer, although made of stone, is slightly faster than an iron pick. However, when a block is destroyed, it only has a 1 in 4 chance of being dropped as an item. It also increases the rate at which your hunger bar goes down.
2. Battle Axe
The Battle Axe is made from iron and sticks. It has two uses. It can be used for cutting wood, (like a normal axe), however is only as powerful as a stone axe and loses durability at twice the normal rate when used for this, and is otherwise a very good weapon for fighting off mobs: it does about as much as a fully charged bow at point blank range (5 1/2 hearts), but unfortunately greatly increases the rate at which your hunger bar goes down. It also greatly decreases the rate at which mobs drop items. Plus, when used while sprinting, it can triple the damage, but deals 5 times as much hunger once you kill a mob.
3. Butcher Knife
The Butcher Knife is made from iron and sticks and has an effect that is the opposite of the last two items. First of all, although it is made with iron, it has the strength and durability of a stone sword. On the other hand, (with the exception of raw chicken from chickens and bones from skeletons) doubles or sometimes even triples the number of items dropped.
4. Scythe
A scythe, made from cobblestone and sticks, can be used in several ways. First of all, it can be used for farming. If used to till soil, it loses durability at triple the speed of if it were used to gather wheat. If used to gather wheat, it has a 1 in 3 chance of dropping twice the wheat and seeds. It can also be used as a weapon, but drains the durability at twice the speed as tilling soil. It is as powerful as an iron sword.
Interesting, but not useful. We already have all the tools we need. Though your suggestions are interesting, would they really add to the game?
Well, people often complain about how limited you are to weaponry in minecraft. This would add a bit more variety. Plus, this would add options: Do I want to mine this tunnel fast, or do I want all the materials from it? Most people would probably want a couple of hammers in their inventory if they were caving, beacuse if they have to mine out a lot of cobblestone, they probably want to do it without 20 stacks of cobblestone piling up in their inventory.

Consider adding more materials for hammers; at that point I will support your idea.
I would add the Battle Axe
I dont like only using a sword for pvp
I want to try something else too,
Do i want to risk a chance of starting to lose hunger in a middle of a fight but be stronger then the other person who has a sword
Or
Do i want to keep my Hunger but do less dammage?

Overall Good post, it has its ups and downs

Yeah, I agree we really don't need anything more, but variety is always good. Unlike the other tools, maybe one, two, or all of them can only be made with certain materials to, instead of the standard tier style.
The scythe is way too overpowered. The battle axe could work. The hammer is useless. The butcher knife removes the purpose of Looting enchantments
Useless? I'd think the same if I hadn't seen Charlie's post. The hammer is exactly what I'd want if I was tunneling through cobble to find diamonds. If the chance of a drop was increased to 50% or even 75%, it'd be perfect.. much more effective than TNT mining, yet better for huge areas of cobble or mining your way down to diamond level.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
"I don't plan to add a new dimension at the moment. It's just to performance heavy on servers, and the current dimensions need more attention before we start adding new ones." < Yeah, like biomes or actual varied terrain in the nether. Nether ruins didn't do the trick at all.

Any suggestions?
