Exactly. Granted, I love a lot of stories in various games (Assassin's Creed, for one)...But seriously. Pac-man. Tetris. iOS games. All great, no stories.
Though if they want to pretend The End is a literal end, they probably should at least try an excuse plot (ala Mario).
Minecraft is obviously the aftermath of a civilization obliterating global magical war, after nature has reclaimed what was once the crumbling ruins of man's mighty cities, leaving only the occasional decrepit "dungeon" and derelict mines buried far under the earth. Zombies, skellies, and Steve are all that're left of mankind. Creepers are genetically engineered weapons gone feral. Netherportals were a failed attempt to weaponize Hell itself.
We have the same idea, except I think endermen, testificates and pigmen were also humans.

No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...
If you want a story, look up the religion in minecraft thread in Discussions. The lore they have is badass. And the lore for Endermen in particular is terrifying.

I was thinking pigman were mutated and/or magically altered pigs, and testificates were another sentient race that lived alongside humans, and possibly who we were at war against.

Since the later 1.9 Pres I thought of something along the lines of that, also. I figured that there was a sort of a race of people that came before the Testificates, who were a race of mages/scientists (If you're a TES fan, think the Dwemer near the end of their known existence) at constant war with their creations. Perhaps they'd already ventured into the Nether, leaving behind their ruins and evidence of their knowledge of Alchemy, and the End was a product of their own design that backfired on them, transforming them into a race of trans-dimensional beasts (The noises the Endermen make are actually warped voices, look it up). If you think about it, Steve does seem to know an awful lot about their constructs, so it's entirely possible that Steve was the lone survivor of the disaster that obliterated his race. Further expanding on the idea of the End being a creation, the Enderdragon could be the accidental product of experimentation in altering spacetime to create an artificial dimension (This can be backed up by the fact that the End terminates; it is finite, and thus could be the first in what was to be a line of experiments in creating dimensions for free use). Noticing their failure, they attempted to shut down their connections to the End, after putting in place towers to keep the Dragon fed (Or something along the lines of fed or bound), as to keep it from venturing into other realms. The power of the dragon proved too much, and let's say that the overexposure to the dimension itself corrupted and twisted the Endermen into the vile creatures you encounter in your adventures. It makes sense, seeing as how the race is part of the dimension, and thus their essence may be required to venture back to it through their portals with the lack of their original way of entering it. Instead of being transformed, Steve is taken to a random location within the world, with all of his knowledge of his race's creations, and sets out by himself to, once and for all, put the world-destroying threat of this extra dimension to rest. Some of the smaller, fill-in-the-cracks details are fairly obvious (Such as the bareness and lacklusterness of the End being due to the fact that it's a new and experimental creation.), so I left them out as this wall of text is large enough as it is.
I love lore speculation. :3

Bravo sir. I'd take my hat off to you, but I don't own any hats.
I kinda like the idea of a "begining". A chunk that dosent really contain much for materials just the basic starting things. A kind of tutorial/starters area. You would get your starter chest and items then go thru a portal to the game start...
A book would be a good idea, I don't like the idea of a starter shack though, kinda takes away the pressure of building before nightfall. A book could also help new players to understand what to do.

Implying there's any pressure to building a dirt shack...
I had an idea in another thread about making a tiny dimension called "the beginning" composed of a 5x5 hollow cube space, with multi-colored, indestructible blocks, that glow and emit a tone when you hit them. Hit enough and it whites out your screen, and warps you back to your spawn point. Originally intended to be another monistic philosophical ass pull (aka implied world seed) to bridge the End and returning to the Overworld, I've been wondering if theres another obscure dysfunctional use for it.

Well, testificates do look semi-human, and are based on the (human) Steve model, so I found it logical to assume they're descendants of humans. As for pigmen, to me the lack of a snout suggests they aren't actually related to pigs, but humans who evolved in a different direction to testificates. Instead of being a passive society, the pigmen are warlike (hence the swords) and sinful.

It's called using your imagination. I know most media now adays has burnt that gland out of your head, but Minecraft doesn't need to follow suit. Just because something isn't spelled out for you in a cut scene doesn't mean we can't fill in the gaps to our hearts content.
I don't like the idea of Minecraft gettinga "story" to it.
Alot of rpg games lose the excitement after beating it once or twice. If Minecraft were given a purpose and story to it then it would weaken the games uniqueness. I love the survival aspect.
I suppose a half tutorial mode half beginning explanatin would be nice.
And to those of you who say Minecraft has no end. Well you are partially correct. You can always keep playing.
But going to THE END gives you more expierience in one dragon slaying then you can gather throughout more than one day. There is also only one dragon to fight (unless you're on a multiplayer server) and so far it is the only boss in the game.
You can't just say "Minecraft never ends". But I suppose it would be better to say Minecraft has a climax.
ok ok every1 listen up stop trying to be smart and saying hears ur story blah blah blah its a very good question now i think instead of spawning in some random biome we should spawn in a house in a village and thers a bed and a chest and other villagers going around it would be like you just woke up its better then just spawning some random place i hope this makes sense
Dafuq did you say? If you begin at the beginning, its a tutorial? Thats gonna boom some brains for some veterans.
didn't a really old version of minecraft start in a shed?

You defeat the Enderdragon, the credits roll by.
You've just completed the game...
Where have you been? Under a rock? xD
Implying there's any pressure to building a dirt shack...
And after the credits, the game keeps going...
