While mining some obsidian the other day, I realized that obsidian has no real use other than making nether portals, and is not very worth mining for looks unless you have a lot of diamond. My first thought was that obsidian should be used to make tools and armor, but I realized that there are a dozen mods that do this already.
To make re-purposing obsidian more useful, I would suggest that the basic tiers of materials for tools, weapons, and armor be made more in-depth. To make the tiers more in depth, i would add materials to the list so that there is a basic choice between durability and speed.
For instance, if steel were to be added to the game, it could be made by placing (X) amount of iron in the work-bench with (X) amount of coal. This would not only make sense in a real world comparison, but it would allow for an intermediate transition between iron and diamond. This new steel material would then take on the speed of materials like gold or iron for mining, but would also be more durable than iron.
As for Obsidian, it would more durrable than diamond, but maybe not as fast, or faster, but the addition of obsidian to the material tiers would add a lot more versatility to material choice when making tools and armor.
The addition of other materials like copper (to be also used as a catalyst for red-stone, or in tools faster than iron, but less durrable than cobble) and some kind of material from the nether.
The way that I have imagined this update to the game would allow for some of the more basic and sometimes useless materials (like obsidian) to have more purpose. Also, if anything were to be made from a nether material, People would have more reasons than glow-stone, soulsand, and potions to go to the nether.
That is my suggestion, and I believe it would add a lot more fun to the game, and would open up a lot more opportunities for how people make their buildings.
Theres been hundreds of threads on trying to shoe horn new materials in.... and all but of a few of them:
- Has no other significant uses
- Mucks up the ore quantities
- includes some kind of complicated crafting process
- in the end, isn't an improvement over the current system
And while the only metal I ever considered that would be feasible is steel (mostly because we have the materials needed in the game already), but can't really serve much purpose beyond tools or armor.

And Ender Chests. And Enchanting Tables.

I think I'd rather keep the simple weapon/tool creation we have now. There's no big incentive for Mojang to add this "material transition" along with the pointless feature of different material/durability mixing. If you want a stronger tool, either keep looking for diamonds or go for an enchantment.

Oh god how did this thread get two +1s?
On-topic, Steel is unnecessary, but if it wasn't so easy to make it might not be too bad. Better for a mod in my opinion though. As for obsidian tools, that is just a horrible idea. Especially if it's more durable than diamond (I mean really? That's not fun or realistic. That's OP, especially if it's enchanted and you have a source of obsidian.). Copper, meh. Probably not for tools. If it was used for something useful it might be interesting, but other than that, It would be more worth the effort to get Iron anyway. By the time you start mining for Copper, you'll be ready to start mining for Iron. The progression is ruined.

It's hard criticizing ideas when one is tired, so you'd better appreciate it when I criticize yours.

Obsidian has plenty of use, you obviously are just a very close minded or a dumbass who plays on single player.
