I have seen this said in a few topics, but no one went into much depth, so that's what I'm doing. in other words, be ready for a text-tsunami.
As most people who play minecraft (excluding the noobiest of noobs) know, doors are only placeable on the edges of blocks. I'm sure I'm not the only person who has wanted a nice iron bar wall with an iron door, only to cry later because of how ugly it looked because the door was not in line with the bars.
I propose a way to fix this (It's kind of an obvious solution, but sometimes the easiest solution is the most obvious one). Place doors in the middle of a block. Now, I'm sure some people would say something about how Jeb can't do that because the door is 1 block wide, so I say this:
Make the door go fill up half a block outside of its own.
Now, before you all start gouging your eyes out at my insolence, please hear me out. We all know Jeb is perfectly capable of making a block go halfway out into another one, as proven by slabs. Why not have half of a block inside one space and the other half inside another? This has already been done with doors anyways, so why not just cut them in half again?
Not only would this make doors more manageable, it would make them look better and more realistic. I see no perks to door's current setup, and I don't see how this would take too long to code anyways.
Now, before I finish, i'd like to remind everyone before they make a rude comment, or even at all tell me something I said is wrong, that they should make absolutely sure that they are right. Do a little research before you contradict me.
There's always texture packs that many, many artists make and update for every update. I can quote Dokucraft for having bar iron doors in their custom menu. Would you like a link to it?
Edit: Rereading, I just realized what you meant. It would be nicer if they were in the middle, which I agree with. I hate having to move which side I'm on in order to set the side that the door is on. Needless, it gets annoying after a while.
Maybe like half skabs in the most recent snapshots a door's orientation on the block could depend on where you look at it.
Look at closest point - door is on the edge nearest to you
Look at middle - door is in the middle
Look at far end - door is on the far side

I do agree with you because I hate having to surround the door in stone blocks when all the other blocks around it are glass planes because it looks uneven and does not go right. The only problem I would see with this is that it may remove the ability to place doors on the edge of blocks. How ever, mentioned above, their Is the idea of placing the door of where you look. I think that is a good solution and this is a good idea.
Ah, I didn't understand Flipnoter's comment (I thought you meant the door changed where it was AFTER it was placed, kind of like an old fashioned 3D effect) until asalvu kind of cleared that up. Anyways, I like the idea of making the door placeable in three places, but I'm afraid Jeb might want to simplify it, and if he did I would rather have doors in the middle. Think of it like this - a door in the middle would look good from both sides, rather than good on one and crappy on the other.
What do you mean? Opening the door does nothing, and I went into extreme detail as to what happened when the door opened, read the OP. (Opening the door was what I meant when I said "cut the doors in half again.")

How about opening the door...
