Battleaxes would be crafted the same way as axes, only double-sided. The recipie for diamond battleaxes:
ddd
dsd
ese
d=diamond s=stick e=empty (had to put in because of problems with spacing)
The texture:
well, an axe only double sided. (I know im gonna get a lot of "YOU DONT SAY?s"
Battleaxes would be 2x the damage of thir repsective materials' swords. (it does cost 2.5x the meaterials)
They would also be slower to attack with. (they are haeavier)
Please no flaming, this is my first suggestion.

Not gonna flame you. Just going to point out why this perfectly natural suggestion isn't likely to be implemented. (And part of the problem IS that it's a perfectly natural suggestion: everyone else has already thought of it, or one very much like it. Mojang has also therefore thought of it, and thus there's no point in pointing out the obvious.)
But I'm against this suggestion because it's unnecessary and merely cosmetic. Minecraft is a kind of schematic game; items in it are there for specific functions, and the function of the melee weapon is already taken care of. There's no functional difference, in Minecraft terms anyway, between a battleaxe and a sword and a spear and a club. They all just increase the damage you do when you hit something. If you want, you can pretend your wooden "sword" is a club, your stone "sword" is a spear, your iron "sword" is an axe, and your diamond "sword" is a katana. The function remains constant, only the cost and effectiveness vary.
We have melee weapons and ranged weapons. We're set.

All im trying to do is add variety to minecraft. We had one color of grass, but were more colors added? We had one type of village, but wasnt one of the villages changed (in snapshots) to be different from the other biome's villages? So why not other things?

I appreciate that. But with respect to grass, the colours are merely a cosmetic overlay depending on biome. They have absolutely no functional effect or difference. Villages in different biomes make use of existing building materials which, admittedly, serve only a primarily aesthetic purpose (although functionally sandstone serves a separate role in that it can be crafted from loose sand).
I don't object to including other weapon types in principle. In fact, I tend to prefer spears to swords anyway. But unless there's some important functional difference for these new weapons, I view them as largely a waste of Mojang resources that I'd rather see spent on other things. And you haven't proposed any really meaningful difference. They're more expensive, slower, and do more damage, sure, but these are still just variations on hit-mob-for-damage.
The other reason I'm not very excited about this proposal is that it would tend to move more emphasis to combat and weapons, and I don't want to see the game become too focused on that. Combat is covered in about as much detail as it needs to be, in balance with all the other things you can do.

There isn't any major difference between this and swords.
There isnt any major difference between shovels and anything else, right? So, both shovels and battleaxes acheive the same goal: doing something faster. But I dont see anyone not wanting shovels, do I?
