The title says it all, I don't really understand why emeralds are introduced when people use coins not gems to buy things, so why not just make it so gold has another use besides shoddy equipment and making clocks? Why not use gold instead of emeralds to trade with villagers?
Because its easy to get gold from mining or zombiebigman, so you could build a gold farm in the nether and could trade that for anything. But Notch wanted a currency that can only be aquired by trading, to prevent players from having some kind of "money-mashine".
No support. Keep Emeralds as a currency for Testificates, not Gold.
How many times are people gonna suggest this? It's pretty unlikely Mojang is just gonna change the currency to Gold after all that trouble of implementing Emerald. Just because a lot of games out there use gold and/or coins as currency doesn't mean Minecraft needs to jump on the bandwagon.

Hey, you there. Yes, you! Are you thinking about posting a suggestion on the forums anytime soon? If so, please read this before doing so.
Not true. In the legend of Zelda they use Rupees as currency, and they are little gems. Minecraft can use gems as currency too if it wants.
Also, gold wouldn't work. It would be like using food as currency. It wouldn't stay in the system because people would keep eating it.
