Just a simple idea here, sorry if it's been mentioned before, I didn't find it with a search.
An idea for a player store that's simple and in-line with the mechanics of the game, I feel.
Basically it would be a dispenser that you can put items into, but can't get them OUT unless you pay an emerald. Use an emerald on the dispenser, out comes the item. This could let players set up their own stores / vending machines on SMP servers.
Just something I thought up today, wanted to post it.
I think this is a really nice idea, but where would the emeralds go? Maybe attach a chest to the back of it?
Could be a problem. Maybe it could also feed into the enderchest of the owning player? That's getting complicated though.
I could see this as simply eating the emeralds too though... and would still work.
Ok Here's what I'm thinking, sorry if it seems a bit complicated.
When placing the vending machine, a gui pops up with some levers/buttons. The player has to set the levers and buttons to a certain configuration (like a pin). Not anything too complicated, maybe 5 levers in a row that can be either up or down. To access the vending machine (i.e. to restock or claim emeralds) the player has to configure the levers to match the pin. I know it sounds too advanced for MC. Or maybe just add a code that says only the player who placed it has access to the inventory inside.

Hmmm, not really sure if this is good. It is certainly a brand new, very creative, suggestion that I have never heard of, but I'm still not 100 percent sure on how that's going to work.
I am happy with how trading is(meaning between players and villagers, no official player to player uses/items).
It's a very unique idea but I'm not sure it's something that belongs in vanilla.
No support from me.

I like the idea of an enderchest being part of the recipe. Maybe an Enderchest and a dispenser are combined. Any recieved emeralds are sent to the player's enderchest.
I thought of it only because on my server we have a set of stores along a coastline boardwalk. The shops are owned by different players... It's just for show, really. Would be cool if you could use emeralds to buy stuff from eachother though.

I'm fairly certain that emeralds are intended by Mojang to be a currency, and that players will be trading them regardless. I think it fits very well into the theme of vanilla minecraft. I suppose the only place it doesn't quite fit is into single player.
This would be a heck of a lot easier if Emeralds were treated as a variable in the player.dat file rather than an in-game item. Then we wouldn't have to worry about where the Emeralds go, as they would automatically be transferred to the player's inventory.

Honestly the original idea was more to have to pay to retrieve an item from a dispenser, not that the owner of the dispenser GETS paid, just that the user has to pay. I mentioned it in that simple way because that feels in line with how minecraft works, it's simple and easy to understand.
You can put items in, but not take them out, unless you pay an emerald.
I think getting paid FOR the feature would be nice, but might be outside the realm of what the game is like, and much more like a mod. Still, it'd be nice to have emeralds become a real currency.

Curse PremiumVillagers should be able to auto use it in ssp

Curse PremiumYeah, I'm wondering where the emeralds will go too.
I said this. Two days later, my computer's motherboard melted down and I had to get a new one with Windows 8.
Irony in the first degree.

It would be even better if we had shelves to display our stock on.
