I've seen on the "Eventual features" list on the wiki, one of the things that could be added in the near future is custom paintings. Well, I've devised a system on how this would work. What do you guys think?
First off, you'd have to craft an easel, like this in the crafting table:
You would then place the easel down in any spot you'd like, and if you want to break it, you can use an axe for the fastest results.
Next, you'll have to make a canvas to paint on. Here's the recipe for that:
With your canvas, you must have your easel placed down, and when you right-click the easel with the canvas, it will be placed on the easel.
A paintbrush is the last thing you must craft, requiring this crafting recipe to make:
You can also choose to make an apron, but it is only optional. However, if you don't make one, your character will get paint splotches on them, and you'll have to jump in a pool of water to get them off! Here's the apron recipe (not to be confused with the leather tunic recipe; this one uses 2 string in the top corners instead of 2 leather):
Now, onto how to create the painting. To open up the canvas and paint, you will need to right-click the easel with the paintbrush. You may right-click it with your bare hands or anything else, but you can only paint if you right-click it with the paintbrush.
When you right-click the painting, you will be able to select what pixel size you want it to be (I've listed example paintings in the game next to each size):
For the color paint you want, you must have that color dye somewhere in your inventory. So, if you wanted red paint, you'd need rose red dye in your inventory. Using a certain color many times will not take away your dye, just in case you want to use it for something else, like creating colored wool.
Once you finish your painting, there will be a "Done" button below the canvas screen. If you click that, you will be asked to name your masterpiece, and after you do that, the canvas will be removed from the easel and you'll get your painting to place anywhere in the world.
You'll also automatically have a frame around the painting when you place it, and you'll also get to keep your easel and paintbrush. Oh, and one final thing, your painting will also have a purple glow on it in your inventory, much like custom books!
When I saw this topic, I immediately thought you meant adding in your own pictures, but painting your own pictures seems a bit much and like the above posters have pointed out.. it can get out of hand.. fast. I think I would be better if you could upload your own pics into a minecraft folder, and have them randomly appear when putting up paintings. This however would be single-player specific, as multi-player servers would be littered with inappropriate paintings/ photos.
I'm happy with how paintings currently are. I really don't want people making vulgar or disgusting things in multiplayer...This is something minecraft can do without.
It's a neat idea and you've presented it well so good job.
I do not support this.

Kingdoms rise and fall. Just don't burn the paintings in the Louvre, that's all.

Soon there will be no singleplayer or multiplayer, remember? The merge?
Anyways, I think this is an awesome idea. A way to prevent griefing could be that whenever someone finishes a painting it becomes "published" like a book. The painter can give it a title as well. When someone right clicks on a custom painting it will say:
*INSERT TITLE HERE*
By: *INSERT USER WHO PAINTED IT HERE*
That way if any penis art pops up the admin can see who done it and can swing the ban-hammer accordingly.
I don't have a problem with customizable paintings for content to go with the writable books. But I thing you've got a few too many intermediate steps in the crafting here. In Minecraft, we don't have a lot of intermediate steps unless there are other things the intermediates can be used for. Making easels and canvases and brushes doesn't quite fit with that.

The option to open your single-player world to multi-player is available, but My remark was regarding servers that were meant to hold a large number of occupants. If its just you and a couple friend in your single-player (turned multi-player) world, and you discover a crude, or unwanted photo/ painting, it won't take long to discover who posted it.
I dont see this exact way happening because of its complicated manner. If this were added I can see them adding a brush that lets you edit pre-exsisting paintings by right click. Also if someone places a rude painting just punch it off, plus add a save and open feature so if your masterpiece is stolen you can create another.

Griefing? How could you grief with them? Oh, wait... you mean you could write swear words on them?
I was pretty sure that's what that other guy meant. I'll try and think of something to prevent things like that!
