Okay, so we all know that its easy to get wood, make wood pick, harvest stone, make stone pick, and then iron is so easy to find, and once we have 1 iron pick we are set for the rest of minecraft, because before that iron pick runs out you can have enough iron for 20 more picks, and then enough picks for 5 stacks of diamond (if you know how to find it)
But, what if the acheivement: Getting an upgrade, was actually getting an upgrade.
The acheivement would become 2 parts instead of 1
Getting an Upgrade and Upgrading your upgrade.
What would happen is (and here is the part where my main suggestion comes in) there would be 3 different rock layers, soft rock, smooth rock and hard rock. the wood pick can mine soft rock which would look like rock with a bit of dirt mixed in (like the current gravel texture and gravel would go back to the old one), the stone pickaxe can mine smooth rock, which would be just like the normal rock. and then iron pickaxe would mine the hard rock, which would look different than smooth rock.
If i were to start up a new game with this implemented it would go like this:
Get wood and wooden pickaxe, mine some stone, dig into the smooth rock layer, find enough iron for iron pickaxe, then dig into the hard rock layer, find diamonds.
When you get the stone and iron pickaxe you would get the two acheivements mentioned earlier.
You would be able to mine every rock layer with a diamond or iron pickaxe, only the top two layers with stone and only the top layer with wooden.
To make sure this isnt a completely useless addition to minecraft (if it were to be added)
The 3 types of new rock would have different blast resistances.
Soft rock would be the weakest,
Smooth rock would be medium
And Hard rock would be the best
To sum it all up the changes would be
- 3 new rock layers
- 1 acheivement splits into 2
- gravel gets its old texture back and the new one is passed on to soft rock
That would just prolong the game with filler content, since the "hard rock" would be useless and annoying, versus what we have right now, which, while short, doesn't unnecessarily add in filler content.

Give hard rock a decent blast resistance,
Suddenly everyone wants their castles to be made out of hard rock.
Not saying I support though, I'm honestly just indifferent towards the idea. :/

An interesting idea for sure. I think there would have to be some uses for the different types of stone like mrwormy suggested (different blast resistances, maybe different crafting recipes for each).
I will say that I find three layers of stone unneeded. From what I gather, Iron would only be located in the Medium Stone layer. This seems like it was done to prevent you from getting Iron with a Wood Pick. But Wood Picks are slow, and only a Stone Pick can mine Iron anyways. If you merged the Soft and Medium Stone layers (leaving them as the regular stone we currently have) and just adding a layer of Hard Stone at diamond level.
