People ask for new ores and such far too often, and with the way that resources are found now, adding new veins of ore may render us with a far too resource-filled Overworld.
But the Nether/End would be perfect for a few rares.
My proposal is that there be new few gem ore/crystal growths added into either the Nether or End. The practical use for this would be either as aesthetics when forged into a complete block, (such as what the secondary point of Emerald serves), and arrow tips.
When crafting arrows, we would replace the flint with a crystal shard/gem ore. This would allow the arrows themselves to either be enchanted, or to have pre-ordained 'enchantments' based on their consistency and level of compression regarding their realistic counter-parts. An example:
Obsidian itself, has been used as tips for spears, arrows and the like with an amazing piercing ability in reality.
So, why not see certain rares/crystal growths generate in the Nether/End, or if pulled off right, a rare chance for a crystal growth to grow on an empty stone block, beginning at a proper depth level in the overworld. Allowing them to generate this way, even in the Overworld wouldn't replace any stone blocks, as another pre-requisite for them to grow would be an empty block of air on a given side.
Even if this changes nothing regarding the Nether/End, the entire point is to allow a practical use for 'shards' or gem ore that could indeed be used in terms of piercing.
An emerald sword would break realistically, but an emerald tipped arrow would be good for it's single use.
After we craft a nether portal and build a small, indestructible building, the point of obsidian is void.
So. . .
Emerald arrow pre-ordained enchantment: Shatter I-II: Upon hitting an entity, the arrow tip would shatter, causing monsters to be dealt a small amount of damage for a 5 block shatter radius. (You wouldn't even need to see the emerald shards, think of it as a type of poison while in a set radius) This enchantment can be offset by the rate of further shattering due to the monster standing in the blocks (such as a time limit before all shards dissapear within the radius.) Not enough damage to go over-board with, but enough of a slight knockback to temporarily allow the player his escape from approaching monsters. Perhaps the time limit could be something so subtle as two-three seconds.
Ruby arrow pre-ordained enchantment: FlameI-II :Upon hitting a live entity, the entity would be lit on fire. (Simply recycle the bow enchantment) Second level of enchantment would have a longer effect.
Obsidian Arrow pre-ordained enchantment: Piercing I: Arrow will pierce 1-2 extra enemies (For a total of three enemies hit with a single arrow if lucky)
Diamond Arrow pre-ordained enchantment: Soft Block Piercing I: Arrow will be capable of penetrating a total of 1-2 soft block (Dirt, Sand, Gravel, Wool, Grass, Snow, Leaf, etc) and be capable of making a hit on one enemy. If the arrow if fired into the side of a dirt cliff, or more soft blocks than two, the arrow dissapears upon contact with the third, to avoid glitching/entity corruption.
And just for the Hell of it. . .
Slime Arrow Pre-ordained enchantment: Slow I: Arrow will cause any block it touches to slow living entities. (Perhaps have a time of decay before the slime eventually disappears)
Glowstone Arrow pre-ordained enchantment: Light I: Upon hitting any surface, the glowstone arrow will give off light for a short ammount of time before time of decay.
i really like the glowstone one, and think that adding something to look roe in the nether/end would make those places much more useful. the enchantments might make them a bit much, unless the ores/gems/whatever were decently rare.another thing for the light arrow could be that you could use a torch instead of flint, and it would work like the glowstone one.
this would kind of ruin the point of flint. i like the idea of a glowstone arrow because then you could shoot one down a cave to see whats there, but i don't like the idea of using different kinds of arrows for combat

That's why the ores themselves would be rare. It would give a way to put the 'nice finds' into a practical use. The gems would not only cause players to venture out and mine/explore more, but the balance at which the rate of find and the enchantments themselves would still have flint as the main contender for arrows.
But, shooting a glowstone arrows into an abysal drop would be awesome. I've fallen into a massive gathering of monsters far too many times before, ha.

I agree with you. When I mean rare, I'm talking a type of find that you scream in joy about. Perhaps 50-60x more rare than diamond? Or even a single block-vein generation, like with how Emerald is spread out in the snapshot. It begins generating at a decent layer, but it spawns in a single vein, with generation spread out by a lot.
tbh i would rather save diamonds for my armor and weapons but otherwise no complaint here like the idea of using something else for arrows to make them better. farming gravel is a pain.

Aye. Most major resources are used for armor and weapons/tools, but there is but one type of arrow in the game.
Several civilizations had different arrows, different arrow tips, etc.
I believe a little variety in ore aesthetics while also having a bit of arrow variety would help the game.
I like the idea of obsidian arrowheads. Obsidian is hard to obtain but so is a substantial amount of flint. You have to build a gravel tower... When you've got lots of obsidian stored up why not craft one block into a handful of arrowheads? I think that it's okay to have both types of arrowhead since you can only craft ONE type of bow while other weapons have 6 variations. Also, obsidian arrowheads and spearheads are realistic as many stone-age peoples here on earth used them for centuries. Obsidian arrows could deal a bit more damage than flint (they are sharper and lighter).
I also like the idea of an illuminated arrow, though flaming arrows are more practical. What I'd like to see on the crafting table is a torch and feathers. Flaming arrows were usually made this way (a flame bundle fixed to an arrow shaft), more to mark a target for fellow archers and to illuminate or to set fire to it's target. Imagine firing one into a massive cavern and watching the light play off the features of the cave as it sails through the dark and leaves a point of light where it lands. Sweet. Should the flaming arrow go out or remain lit as a torch? Strike an enemy with one and watch as it ignites. Fire them into your friends lovely wooden house and enjoy the show.

Ha. I couldn't agree with you more. Even if only obsidian could be turned into shards of some sort, I'd still like to see that. Obsidian is also the highest grade piercing/cutting utensile today. Some hospitals use obsidian blades for incisions, as they leave a cleaner, less noticable scar and due to the sharpness on a nanometer, they irritate less cells and tissue when passing through.
And some form of an illiuminated arrow would be damn cool. I can definitely picture that being useful.
If at all, I'd like to see at these those two added to the game. And I definitely feel you on how bows/arrows are rather stagnant in terms of use and variety. Same arrows, same bow. It would definitely give me a reason to play more often than I do.
