If you've been playing Minecraft for some time, then your storage room would be filled with stacks and stacks of redstone that is barely used. (unless you're a redstone genius and automates every single thing in your house)
While your iron, gold, and lapis lazuli supply sits neatly in block form in your chests, redstone and coal requires about a double chest each by itself to hold it all.
So what if redstone and coal blocks were added?
They would be crafted the same way as all the other metal blocks, and of course they would have their own unique textures.
The Redstone Block would act like Redstone Ore - it would light up when stepped on or when you hit it, but it would also send out a redstone signal at the same time. (redstone experts out there would find this really useful) It would be also used for aesthetic purposes.
The Block of Coal would be usable as fuel - one Block of Coal put into a furnace would smelt a stack of items. Also, the Block of Coal is flammable.
Now, I know many people are gonna say that redstone is a dust, so it cannot be crafted into a block, but here's the solution - if you break a Redstone Block, it would drop 9 individual pieces of redstone dust, unless you use Silk Touch, of course.
I hope you liked this idea and reply in the comments what you think!
I don't know, and this isn't a very original idea either. I see your point in compact storage, but I just don't see a likelyhood of it, Its almost like saying make compact flint or something. And Glowstone blocks are made from glowstone dust so you should just be able to make redstone blocks out of dust. Besides, Coal I think is too widely used (atleast for me) for fueling furnaces and torches that I don't really store it that much, and same for redstone. The reason I make compact blocks is becuase I don't use diamonds, lapiz, gold, or emeralds that much, but for Iron, coal, and redstone sometimes I do.
But If there is such thing as a Coal block though, there should be a special property too it like, It is extremely flamable and make nearby surfaces catch fire if lit, or/and make it able to light up dark places better.
This MUST be implemented, but suggested tons of times. I have an entire storage room for redstone ONLY. X( Same with coal, but it's not filled up al of the way.
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, YES! (Did I say yes?) </cliche>
Redstone especially since one Ore block pops out a bunch at once, and Coal too since it's soooo plentiful.
Then there's the Cobble problem. I have lots and lots AND LOTS of stacks of it from building an underground base. So, nine blocks of Cobble can be used to create a... Cobblestone... Block... that........... oh wait...
And to all saying the Redstone Block would be so useless: if it's useless, then the other storage blocks are even more useless since they don't do anything AT ALL.

Why does everyone think I don't have an avatar? Is there anyone who can see the one black pixel.
