Lets see how many crops there are in Minecraft.1...2...3...4...(if you want to count mushrooms as a crop). There should be more crops in Minecraft.More crops equalls more food.Anyway, there should be more crops for a larger wariety of food.Click the spoilers below.
Tomatoes
Tomato seeds would be found in Abandoned Mineshafts and also Stronghold chests. They would take about 2 1/2 Minecraft days to fully grow. When they are harvested, only the tomatoes pop off the plant. The plant would wither after a Minecraft week (2.333 hours of gameplay). Then after that they would need to be replanted.(When you put a tomato in the crafting area, you would get 1 seed, like pumpkins and melon). When eaten raw,the tomato will generate 1 food chunk. When cooked in the furnace,it will be called a "cooked tomato"(naturally). It will generate 2 food chunks.
Corn
Corn seeds can ONLY be found in stronghold chests. When planted,it will take about 4 Minecraft days to fully grow. When it has fully gown and needs to be harvest, you will only take the corn off the plant (like tomatoes as stated before). It would take 3 days for the corn to regrow. It would take 1.5 Minecraft weeks (3.4995 hours of gameplay) for the plant to wither. It would then need to be replanted.Corn seeds would also be ubtained from putting corn into the crafting area, where you would get 2 seeds.Corn eaten raw would heal 2 hunger chunks. When put into the crafting area with a bucket of water (in any way possible),it would make "boiled corn".Boiled corn would generate 3 1/2 hunger chunks.
Lettuce
Lettuce could be found in Stronghold and Abandoned Mineshaft chests. They would take 2 Minecraft days to fully grow. When harvested, the entire plant would be harvested and drop lettuce and lettuce seeds.Raw lettuce would generate 1 hunger chunk. When cooked in the furnace,it would make "cooked lettuce" and would generate 2 hunger chunks.
There are my ideas, comment what you want (just don't start a flame war,I have been in 2 already). And don't forget to vote in the poll!
Honestly? We have plenty of food. I would like to see something like grapes or berries; something that's more wild than it is domestic, but other than that I think we have more than enough food. "Variety" isn't much of a reason to add it, it's a very weak argument.

It would impossible for Mojang to implement tomatoes and corn because blocks can't store all that data.
1.Of course,Captian Obvious.
2.Let's look at a sapling.A sapling turns into a tree. The tree contains wood (sometimes a lot) and leaves. The leaves have a chance of dropping apples and saplings. Now you're saying that Mojang hasn't implemented something that contains as much data as my ideas.

2. But everything is incremented randomly, not precisely like your idea is. If something were to grow after a set amount of time, it can't exceed 0.8 seconds.

Editting at the moment.I said that it would take 2.333 hours for the plant to wither after it is planted.xD.I know right.

I have a good reason,there aren't enough crops.
