Trinitrotoluene is used for mining and making holes in the ground, I've yet to see someone set up land mines as a main form of combat.
You've never fought terrorists, guerrillas, and other hit and run types. Hidden explosives are a favorite of any outgunned and outnumbered military group. And while one man does not constitute an army, one must admit that Steve is rather outnumbered in the world of Minecraft.
I'm sure he'll take any edge (especially if it shines bright with pretty colours) he can get.
Whatever the case, I"m more concerned with when this alchemy thing will be implemented than whether I get to make bombs or fire arrows.

I like the idea. The formuli need tweaking from the OP but I, for one, think it would make an awesome addition to MC. I also agree that making swords that fire Magic Missile is getting a little too extreme. I wouldn't mind enchanting arrows (though not necessarily as alchemy) but you would spend 6 ice to enchant a SINGLE arrow. Thus it would take a long time and a lot of effort to get a full quiver, not to mention a LOT of the enchantment material (which needs to be hard to find) but their efects need to be limited, such as an ice arrow simply freezes an opponent in place (but they can still attack) or makes them move slower but does no damage.
Just to point out, there is already a similar ability built into CraftBook, the "cauldron" I think if MC isnt going to have alchemy any time soon, a mod should be made that can use it.
I'd also like to see, as was suggested there being hundreds of possible combination that produce effects, but not all of them good, some blowing up, some creating a negative effect (imagine your gold sword turning to wood) or even spawning monsters (which, in the right time and place, might actually be seen as useful) I'm not a fan of the "chance of success" modifier (I wasted so many hours in Everquest doing "Alchemy" and my combination failing and having to retrieve MORE hard-to-obtain materials, making it especially frustrating)
I also think alchemy should have a great cost for higher-level transmutations. you want a diamond sword? that's 10 diamonds and a gold sword! (and FYI: diamonds are actually sadly common when you get down near the bottom of the world, when I was mining out a huge cavernous "underground mansion" I had like 2 stacks of diamonds)
It takes 3 diamonds, two gold, and some random junk to make a diamond sword.
What I say:
No.

Proudly wanting Classic Alpha to truly become Survival Alpha. Mobs killing blocks, ridiculously powerful beasts, and insanely unfair gameplay. Classic Alpha is boring. I want SURVIVAL alpha! Eh? Eh? ***** all you want.
You should be able to make a Philosopher's Stone using Golden Apples alchemized with diamond. I guess it could make you temporarily immortal or revive you upon death once.
I like most that the alchemy crafting grid is significantly different to the normal 2x2 and 3x3 crafting grids. It differentiates it, and makes it feel more... esoteric?
A great thread. I just hope I will be able to adjust well to this. I actually do want as you call it "pew pew" magic implemented, if making sure it doesn't ruin the game, like simple spells, and barely any complex ones. Fireball, for instance... Anyway, this could be combined with magic, (if you don't like that idea calm yourself) but only to a small extent, such as the enchanting you mentioned.

Oh. Just a thought: Real Life alchemists wanted to change lead into gold because gold is useful and lead is not. Thus, Minecraftian alchemists would change gold into diamond for the same reason. But in this case, we would just be infusing gold with diamond. That is a lot easier than changing gold to diamond. Transmuting the gold sword into a diamond sword would use.. oh... catalyst the prime mercury and the other thing be gold. Or something. I obviously cannot explain.
This should be updated to reflect the name change of gunpowder/sulphur, and also to include the new dyes. I think using bonemeal and squid ink in my Alchemy would be awesome. :biggrin.gif:

Anyway, two thumbs up!

Dragons need to be implemented. No arguments.
I support.
Only all the posers. dont get me wrong FMA is awesome (Brotherhood esp) but to put it as a skin is cheesy, imo...

What a shame.

Change your words fittingly.
