So, this is more or less an adventure map/creative mode thing, but I was thinking it would be cool if you could have a boulder that kills the player or pushes things, like in Indiana Jones or Zelda. Here are the specifics:
It would come out of a dispenser. The boulder keeps rolling in the direction that it was dispensed until it hits any kind of block. If the player touches the boulder while it is moving, they are hurt or killed. The boulder can fall down a pit as well if it lies in the boulder's trajectory. There would be three different sizes- a small boulder, which takes up a 3 x 3 area, a medium boulder, which takes up a 5 x 5 area, and a large boulder, which takes up a 7 x 7 area. The crafting recipe for the small boulder would be some stone in a circle-ish shape (would have to just be a "+" shape). A medium boulder would be a the small boulder recipe, but the center would a small boulder, and the large boulder would be the same, but with a medium boulder center.
Here are some diagrams. Grey wool = Stone, Green wool = Small Boulder, Yellow wool = Medium Boulder, Red Wool = Large Boulder, Glass = Nothing.
There are different kinds of blocks it can interact with too:
Stone or ores: The boulder breaks when it hits these blocks.
Wood: Brings the boulder to a halt. From this state, the boulder can be pushed in any direction.
Cloth: Bounces the boulder in a different direction.
Glass or other fragile blocks: Breaks when the boulder hits it. Could be used to open new passages in adventure maps.
Here are some potential setups. The red arrow is the boulder's path. A pointy bubble means that the boulder broke, a circle means that it stopped moving. There will be pictures of both the boulder going on flat land and falling down a pit.
Boulder hits stone and breaks:
Boulder hits wood and stops:
Boulder hits wool and bounces:
Boulder hits glass, breaks it, and continues:
EDIT: In my spare time, I made some sort of "stop motion" GIFs showing what this would be like.
Its still missing something to be a fully worthwhile idea.....
Part of me wants to suggest making it related to mine tracks, rather then a free roaming entity ... but theres this huge flaw with trying to hide it.
Hmm... I see where you're going with this. Minecart tracks would be sort of wierd though... and I would think that would only make it more obvious.
As for hiding it, I wasn't really meaning for this to be a suprise trap, more of an obstacle. Like, going around a room while trying to avoid the path of a boulder. You might be able to make it work though... I mean, all you need is a dispenser on the wall and stone opposite the dispenser. It's pretty much the same for an arrow trap.
So when moving they counds as a entity? like faling sand. And that entity can damage mobs and the player, But when it tuches wood it are turned into blocks,? or at least turned into a block like item that can be walked on? that sounds wierd, but meaby it will work.
another problem if it are coundet as a entity, what hapends when it lands on a slab or torch? as they stops sand from reforming and make them drop as a resorce.
Or cacti, that destroys entities.
Yes, pretty much. It would be like a minecart though; it has a collision box solid enough to walk on. It only damages you if it's currently moving. It would still be an entity when it hits wood, it would just be still and not damage you.
And that doesn't apply for all entities, just sand/gravel. For example, mobs don't get destroyed when they land on torches or slabs, and only get damaged when they touch a cactus, and that damage can be turned off.
Gravel and sand are destroyed bacause it tries to reform on a already ocupied block. But I suppose thats solved if it never resets to a block state.
If that cacti damage could be switched off, I would prefer if the made it to all enties. what hapends to it if it trying to roll into a tunnel thas smaler than it? will it breake or stop, and if its half wood half wool?
What hapends if it hits a plain wool wall? will it bounce straight back? if it lands on a wool floor?
Is it effected/effecting water or lava sources? will it give a one hit kill? or meaby only a one hit kill if it lands on the mob/player. otherwise it only gives a loot of damage.
Hmm, good points. If it tries to go into a tunnel smaller than it, it should break. If it hits a plain wool wall, it'll bounce back, if it lands on a wool floor, it'll keep bouncing indefinitely. So you could have "timed" obstacles. It doesn't effect lava/water sources- as in, it can go into the lava, but if you break the boulder, the lava will still be there. It's only a one hit kill if it lands on the player, otherwise it does damage. The larger the size, the more damage it does.
Use Turbo-model-thingy to create a sphere LOOKING object, it will be, in fact, just allot of edges, but it would look good anyway.Hmmm, also, about if it goes into a space too small.... If its a large boulder and it smacks into a space big enough for a medium boulder, it should just continue as a medium boulder, if it then smacks a space big enough for a small boulder, it should carry on as a small boulder. ALSO, if its a large boulder and it smacks into a space that only a small boulder can go, it should break into a small boulder.
If the boulder is going to be a cube(if it isn't then sign me out right now) then it should be a series of very small cubes that make it seem like a sphere from relatively far away, but closer inspection would show that it is in fact cubes.
This sounds close to what Notch would defiantly not mind in his game. The massive labyrinths of death! oh man yes! And I love the idea of being a hidden trap. Especially behind glass! I can just imagine walking through a hall of glass and seeing this humongous Boulder coming at me destroying the glass hall and opening up lava channels and breaking at the entrance of it and now forcing you to figure out a new path. Pistons are cool but being able to design/create intense situations like this would be awesome!
Now on the wooden surface thing... That seems like it'll need more time to be worked out to fit the game better... the rest sounds like something they can implement and release... the wood actions could be a separate release down the road.
Either way I hope this implement this.
