Hey guys!
I was testing one of the new snapshots yesterday, just to see what 1.3 would have to offer. I saw that villager trading had FINALLY been added, I was happy for that, but other than geetting items, there isnt too much of a point to it. I would lie Jeb to upgrade the NPC villages so that when you trade with them more and more, they begin to grow, actually placing blocks. think: after enough trading you could have 4 blacksmiths! Also, what if you traded wth the blacsmith certain things, he would make items and deposit them in the chest inside the blacksmith. Alos, when you trade with some of them, like the librarian for instance, he adds written stories in a chest, (maybe mojang could have aa writing contest?). Also we could have some of them farm when you trade with them farming supplys, liehoes and seeds, and they actually harvest and replant their wheat, and deposit it in a chest somewhere, anad finally the NPC villagers should be able to make iron golems, so not only could you farm them for iron, but, they will protect the village.
I wouldn't mine villagers building up their towns as you trade with them (especially now that the villages actually match biomes)
however I think you are forgetting one major detail.
After you get a certain distance away, all block updates (excluding things like furnaces) stop for a while till you get closer. NPC villagers also stop all movement after a certain distance has been achieved. This means that while you are away, they won't do anything. which mean you'd have to stand there and watch them if you wanted to see them make any progress on their village.
I don't know about you, but that's not something I intend you spend my time doing.
I have mixed feelings about this idea. On the one hand, there is something attractive about the idea of villages having a life of their own, so that when you come back to them from time to time you might notice something new. On the other hand, shouldn't this be something the player can do instead? One thing I do, almost compulsively, when I find an NPC village, is improve it. I smooth out the contours of the roads, build new structures, replace the well with a design I prefer, and so on. When trading comes out (I don't generally download snapshots, so I'm waiting for 1.3), I will build marketplaces with some villagers in minecarts or otherwise immobilized in market stalls or shops, so there's always a place to go to trade with them.
So it seems to me that if villagers did anything in the way of building, it'd displace my own projects.
I wouldn't mind if they had a few more activities that didn't permanently alter the landscape. For example, they could go fishing, picking apples, sweeping floors, or even harvesting/planting wheat (which would change blocks, but only in a completely renewable way).

You have my support, I have been hoping that jeb would implement something like this for a while. I also think a good addition would be quests, for example; some villager would ask for 30 bones, and if you have them, cool, go ahead and give them to him, but if you don't, you'll have to go on a skeleton massacre.

What about an interface where you can tell the villagers when to build, and you would have to supply them the materials, so they don't go off building structures without you wanting them to.
Well, that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, and I kind of like the idea of increasing the things you can do with villagers. Using them as a source of labour in some way would be nice, but the economics is a little odd. Trade for goods is easy enough to implement, but how do you pay them to build stuff in a way that doesn't take just as much time and effort to direct them as building it yourself?

What do you guys think?
