I was playing Minecraft, and I realised something was missing. The combat system was was made, and then only 1 updates was done, and it only had blocking, potions, and enchantments. It could use a little tune-up.
Blocking
Blocking needs a tune up because most people don't use it, and those who use it rarely do.
The only change I can think of is timing affects damage blocked. If you block like people usually do, only 25% of the damage is blocked. If you start blocking within 1.5 seconds (before, not after), 50% damage is blocked. If you do it within 0.5 seconds(before, not after), 75% of the damage is blocked. If you do it within 0.25 seconds(before, not after), 80% of the damage is blocked. If time it within 0.1 seconds, all damage is negated.
Weapons Weapons have only been changed once, and that was with enchantments. They need another tune-up, but more badly than blocking.
Daggers
Daggers would be weak, fast swords. They only deal 50% of the damage a sword would, but only have a 0.1 second swing time. The swing animation is just stabbing. Daggers are crafted like this (replace the iron with the material): .
Swords
Swords would have a short (around 1 second) swing time. The animation is pulling the sword back, and then a vertical swing. That would be the only change.
Battle Axes
Battle Axes are the strongest, slowest weapon. They have a 3 second swing time, but do 150% more damage than a sword. Also, they have melee AoE. Anything within sight and range is hit. Also, the range is 1 meter more than a swords. They a crafted like this (replace the iron with the material) .
Damage Immunity
Damage Immunity should just be removed. It was only added in to keep people from using a program to rapid-click the mouse and kill in one click. It can be removed because weapons are getting swing time.
Mobs Mobs have been updated, but the system is still mainly the same. Mobs should also have a swing time. Skeletons already have it, with their drawback. Endermen and spiders should have a biting animation. Zombies should swing their arm. Silverfish and the enderdragon shouldn't have an animation.
If you have any ideas, or if there is anything you dislike, please post it. Also, the animations are an option for those people who have a laggy computer.
This is a good idea. I've been looking for a while for ways to change the combat system for the better without sacrificing the simple feel of Minecraft. This does it pretty well. YoeXoe is right, put it in the mod section as well. I would love to see it get made.

bump. there NEEDS to be a mod dedicated for this. Combat in Minecraft is a bit wacky...I would say the Balkon mod has all the different weapons added but it DOES NOT have the delay it needs. Everything is pretty much a swing-swing, massive left click. No skills involved most of the time.

I think instead of blocking with swords you have a shield as well then when you have a quiver with arrows this way you could add different kinds of arrows as well, plus i support what your saying combat needs to be updated
I like the blocking thingy, but the combat weaponries. I don't agree with it because Minecraft was created to be creative I mean to be artistic no to kill with a battleaxe..

But the weapon swing times just seem too out of balance. Swords taking a full second? Battle axes taking three? Way too long. And daggers taking only 0.1 seconds? That'd be like you're the Flash stabbing someone. Swords should only take about a third of a second to swing, battle axes maybe just under one second and daggers about a quarter of a second.
i think the simple made combat is a obstacle, phisics should be added, basic ones,beacause minecraft doesnt change since i dont know, updates just add blocks and maybe entities,updates are not productive,
The combat system NEEDS to be updated, but I feel like you're trying to do so in the wrong ways. If you ask me, the sword needs a more realistic range.
