Alright, so I have read a lot about how people are unsatisfied with their in game names. I too created my username before i knew it was my permenant online name. I wish to devote this to purely ideas and suggestions to what we can do. I think that maybe we should be able to link a max of one account to our original one or be able to change our name once. Once to prevent greifers or with the linking once to prevent people handing out free copies to all of their friends. I don't want to have to rebuy Minecraft for the sake of a better username. Notch if you read this, please reply with anything mojang is thinking of?
This is a problem all online games and networks run into at some point. What some have done to solve it is let players keep the original "bad Name" as an ID and let them choose a different name that would act as their display name. This name could be the same as any others.
It's funny really because it's not like everyone in real life has a unique name. There are so many Johns...
What about just having mojang acounts and just being able to change your mc ingame name? just like on steam.
And of cause you could somehow right click the person and click "player info" and then see what mojang acount it was.
The MP servers track players "by name", so changing your display name results in a new character. Before doing something like this, they are better off unifying the backend accounts so everyone has a majong master account, and then use game specific profiles below it.
It's being planned. But honestly? "I didn't know it would be permanent" isn't much of an excuse. It's like saying "I didn't know that wall color was going to be permanent"; regardless of whether you knew or not, it's your job to make sure the color is one you can live with, or in this case, a name you can live with. It's your username; it should be something you want it to be, not something you're going to wish to change on a whim.
In other words, you shouldn't be naming your character "afgndoighefiohoibkjbkjb" unless you want it to be named "afgndoighefiohoibkjbkjb", that just seems to be common sense.
I think it should be changeable from their sight. To prevent griefers from changing their name, Mojang could combine "ban" and "ipban" so when you type in a player's name to ban them, it remembers their IP, which they can't change.

Or the ban system could remember their Mojang account instead of the IP. (or both)
