I was thinking that sometimes when your mining stone there would be a random chance that a diamond iron coal or any other mineral would fall out of the stone block this would make mining allot less boring for some people because they would not have to search everywhere for something they could get it in stone. But if you do this it should be pretty rare so then people would not get allot of diamond so easily.
i like your idea but the diamond thing should be replaced by diamond shards (i mean not the ore) and they are a bit rare to find them
and you will have to craft into diamond chunk* then smelt it to become a diamond

* diamond shard = Diamond chunk
Good idea. Bit more realistic too. But I think 4 shardes should make 1 diamond.
A little greedy, aren't we? If you're mining already, you're going to encounter tons of ore. There are around 3 diamonds per chunk, and dozens more iron and gold where that came from! Any miner knows that coal is ubiquitous whenever stone's present. There's no point in adding extra drops to plain old stone when there's plenty of drops elsewhere.
In addition, by adding 'diamond shards' that can be crafted into diamond, you're grossly unbalancing the game and allowing it to be "too easy" to get diamonds. By this method, you would only have to scratch the surface and not plunge into the deep caverns of hell to get diamonds.
It all depends on the rarity of these shards. Personally, I find it pretty easy to get diamond. Once I have two or three iron picks, I go on a mining trip and I'm set. I currently have over 100 diamonds in excess in my single-player world, after tens of picks and some shovels and swords.
Say that this diamond shard were to drop half as often as apples from trees ( That's 1 in 400, folks.), I don't think that would be too bad. You would have to, on average, mine 1600 blocks of stone in order to get one diamond. And a diamond pick only mines 1500 blocks. So it wouldn't be overpowered.
Even if these shards dropped 1 in 200 stone blocks, it still takes 800 blocks of stone mined to get a single diamond.

i think this is much better. On multiplayer i've have seen lots of apples drop out trees lately.
As if finding ores isn't easy enough, let's add them as a rare drop to stone! Stone is one of the most common blocks. The chance of a rare drop would have to be 0.0000000001% maybe less!
As far as the diamond shard idea brought up in this topic, diamonds are actually quite common and easy to find just like other ores. Making them even a little more easy to obtain would throw off the already delicate balance of their rarity.
Ores are all over the place and are not in the least bit hard to find, I absolutely do not support this idea.

Kingdoms rise and fall. Just don't burn the paintings in the Louvre, that's all.
Diamonds are meant to be incredibly tough to find so that their value remains very high.
On servers you'll notice that alot of people will have diamond armor. This number of people will be increased in the next update as people can trade emeralds for diamond armor. Imagine how many more so people will be able to get their diamond tools and armor if there are rare drops from mining stone?
You do have a great concept though. I've literally managed to mine nothing but stone for up to a half hour. (That might just be me being a noob or not mining deep enough.)
Maybe it could be a little more balanced out? I love the idea of more rare drops not just coming from slain mobs. But no matter which way you slice it diamond is diamond. And its value needs to remain high.
Why not coal drops instead? It wouldn't be too unbalancing for the game because its easy to get a full stack of charcoal on your first Minecraft day cycle if you chop plenty of trees. And yet this feature would still be helpful because you would be able to craft torches deep underground in an emergency.

Curse PremiumI agree, I know its Minecraft we are talking about... but smelting diamond? Thats even beyond Steve's abilities!
