This topic is about the large biomes world type and trees in the large biomes world type.
Trees are just 1x1 blocks wide in normal minecraft worlds except for jungles where they can be 2x2.
I remembered reading about some upcoming features and saw "large biomes world type" being added along with plenty of other awesome stuff.
So after looking at the screenshots of a comparison between a normal and a large biome I thought, why not make the trees a bit large too and add a bit of a tumbling effect when they are being chopped down.
Trees in forest and taiga biomes would be either the normal 1x1, but also in large biomes they could be 2x2 as well adding more of a "large" feeling to the new large bomes world type, and in jungle biomes maybe 3x3 and possibly 4x4.
Tumbling trees would also be very cool and no, I don't mean trees get cut and then fall left, right, forward of you, or on you, no. I mean when the bottom layer of a tree is cut the whole tree will fall down one layer including the leaf blocks. This would be a bit confusing because wood blocks would need to be like sand
in order for this to work. Also you might be thinking "players that have wood houses with bits and pieces of normal wood blocks floating would need to use new materials instead of wood". Well wood blocks can be like leaf blocks and when placed by the player they stay in that spot even if floating, but naturally generated wood blocks will not float.
Also we all know how branches are a tad bit strange because of the bottom and top texture being something that looks like its been cut. Well what if there was a new block named a "branch" block and they are connected to and generated with trees. This would get rid of that weird chopped like texture off the bottom and top and just put the normal side of the wood texture on top and bottom. This would also help with the tumbling effect because normal wood blocks would not be able to float. Branches will need to be touching either a leaf and a wood block or other branch blocks in order to float and when cut, they become normal original cut wood.
If you want to change my suggestion a bit, feel free to do so, thanks for those who read and comment with constructive criticism.
Edited: -Please note that trees will not fall sideways they will just fall down 1 layer and still be standing
-vines will stick to the block they were stuck too.
-vines or leaves could possibly just fall off as if you hit a tree hard IRL, then some leaves will fall or apples, acorns, etc. (depending on how hard you hit it and what you hit it with if you just decide to hit a tree out of pure enjoyment). This could also be a method in order to obtain apples or make cocoa plants fall.
-Yes, trees should also be taller in the large biomes world type.
My Main idea is that trees are larger and somewhat taller in the new larger biomes world type.
Tumbling trees is more of a side dish, but it not important. All that tumbling trees is useful for is to not have to dirt jump to reach wood blocks which gets annoying after a while, but its not a big deal.
All of this isn't exactly necessary, but it does add to that life like aspect notch was wanting to add.
it's a fine idea, but then they would have to be taller, and then you couldn't reach the tops (only reason you can reach the tops of jungle trees are vines.
To the tumbling trees, I can only say no. Gravity is all funky in Minecraft, making trees fall sideways would be odd considering almost everything else floats.
And branches... really don't bother me at all. I never really thought about it. Do they bother you?
This is for the large biomes world type, so yes I forgot to add they need to be taller. Well they could be taller in a normal world type too.
I don't really have any problems with branches of the height of trees in normal minecraft, but it would be pretty cool if branches were re textured and trees were a bit taller to add that "more life like" aspect that notch stated he wanted to add to the game. I do agree that gravity is a bit funky, but it can always be fixed in time. Vines would still be there in jungle biomes and would fall with the trees or you could just leave the tree alone and climb the vines that way.
As for the 3x3 and 4x4 trees what do you think? I support constructive criticism.
Edited:I mean't that trees fall down 1 block and are still standing.
The main problem with tumbling trees is the fact that they aren't recognized as either a single or composite entity. When they grow they add blocks to the world, but from there on out its all about spacial relationship of blocks. You can theoretically grow 2 trees into each other, and Oak already has variable sizes and shapes that easily overlap each other.
The only way to get around this is to track the growth configurations of every single tree that spawns, or redesign trees around the idea of them being sticky blocks.
