As we all know, you spawn with full health and filled hunger after death. Some players with little food would intentionally kill themselves at the cost of their experience to have these at their maximum.
Well... I was thinking maybe starting off with only five hearts (10 health points, half of the max health) every time you spawn, and that your hunger carries over when you die?
Anyone with me on this?

Oh yeah, the difficulty may affect the hunger and health too now that Prince_Deity mentions it.
I suppose on easy, you respawn with full health and have hunger carried over but have it's limits. Lets say the lowest that you can respawnn with after death would be 10 hunger points.
Normal would have 10 health points and 6 food points.
And hard would carry 6 health points, but not carry hunger over.
Hardcore? ... Pfft. There is no point.

My point was that on Easy you SHOULD respawn with full health and hunger. Hard should probably be half and half, and Normal could be either one.
To work with the middle man, so to speak, Health and hunger limitations may not need to apply with easy difficulty, though normal should have you respawning with maybe half health and half hunger except when you died with more than half of your hunger filled. Hard would have a minimum of three hearts but hunger carried over would either have six hunger points filled or does not have a minimum limit.
In any case, this having a chance to be implemented is small if nonexistent. I guess I would like more reprocussions to be had on minecrafters that don't care to save their enchantment level. With the update of 1.3 being close to finnished, it would just be super easy to buy bottles o' enchanting and get all the levels back or make it beyond what they died with. Since the changes to enchantments has been made in the snapshots and that it will become easier to get skill points for said enchantments, I thought that reprocussions can be levied from enchantments to be made on the health and hunger system based on difficulty.
... you know what? I might as well ask the Minecraft staff personally about this. That is of course no one would mind about it. Or supports it.
