There was an idea some time ago that was interesting but got shot down because of poor wording. I did notice a recurring theme with the comments though.
The original thought was a way to make round worlds. Impractical. Further than that, the original post never covered the chance of a limited world size.
My suggestion is this: A way to make maps exactly as they are, but with limited room to move and work. How small exactly could be an option. Options could range from 100,000 chunks to less than 100.
Upon reaching the border of these maps the world generator would seemlessly mix them in with the chunks on the opposite border. This would create a "loop around" effect without actually changing anything. Map corners would work exactly the same.
Another option to this might be to add temperature and humidity at the poles and equator in a more realistic fashion
This is very simply an alternate game type. Benefits could be to focus your efforts on a contained environment, limiting the size your server can reach, Changing the dynamics of servers to become more economic and resource based. Land would have more value and trade would become a necessity. This would open the door for new ingenuity and more ways to play the game. It could also work better for players who can't run Minecraft very well on their computer.
So like when minecraft used to have borders they dig out that code and insted of changing it to go infinate they make it loop and add it in.... Brilliant, becuase some servers just get too large and then need to reset their world files regulary.
I never actually saw "the corner" in a game. Maybe I was a little late joining up. That's pretty much it though. I like how you described it.
