This suggestion is for a new type of block to enable the construction of tables, desks, display cases and any number of other new and innovative applications.
The tabletop block resembles a slab, but much thinner, about the thickness of a trapdoor. It would be crafted from wooden slabs, three placed horizontally in the crafting matrix. It can be placed on top of or on the side of any structural block to form a table or countertop, shelves, or even floor tiling.
Function: The tabletop is a faster, more convenient form of item storage than the chest, but it can only contain one item or stack, which it displays as if the item were simply lying on top of it, except that it does not float or move like normally dropped items, and the item does not despawn while on a tabletop.
To access the contents of a tabletop, you simply rightclick on it. This swaps the contents of the tabletop with the contents of your hand. That's it.
Some possible uses:
Dinner table: A table set with various food items.
Weapons rack: One click to grab a sword and have it in your hand, ready to fight.
Lab Shelf: Needed materials carefully sorted into shelves, all visible from where you stand by the crafting table or alchemy stand.
Chess Board: An 8x8 array of tabletops can serve as a functional game board for chess, checkers, etc.
Display Case: A single tabletop, surrounded by glass panes.

I HAVE used the search function, and obviously tables have been suggested before, again and again. But this particular approach to table design has, as far as I've been able to find, only appeared as a comment in threads about other, more limited table concepts, usually with elaborate crafting recipes to make several redundant placeable item of furniture.
If I've missed other threads proposing something like this basic utility block, well, I'm sorry.
