I am a player who usually plays on survival, and I have one world that I have been playing on for about a year. In this world I have Nether Gates working as a transportation network, I'm creating other minesites in different areas of the map, and I've found the "End" for my world. The "End" is on the outside of my map border, as is the jungle biome (my world was created before the jungle, so it has spawned far away from my empire), and it is hard to travel and explore my world if I can't get my way back home.
What I suggest is that each time you use a map, it will reveal your position (as it does, you being in the middle of the map) and the map (when explored) will reveal new space rather than the set space it does now. As of now you could make 5 maps, open then in 5 different places, but all 5 will only allow exploration for one set area. I think this should be fixed where you could have multiple maps that will allow you to travel very far distances, while always being able to make it back home.
Mapping definately needs to be updated. I like your idea, it would simplify a lot of things with mapping as it is. I also appreciate how it is now though, where you have unique maps in your inventory that you can look at. Minecraft needs a simpler method of organizing all those maps from different areas. My idea is a 'Map Book' which would act like a chest, allowing you to store maps. It could even organize them on a grid so that they are stored in the proper order, such as...

I'm no programmer, but it seems to me that this would fix the current issue without having to revamp the whole mapping system.
I think it would be great if you could then place a nice map of your land on a wall. It could work similar to paintings, where the map would shift between 1x1, 2x2, 3x3 when you place it. Imagine mapping out a 3000 block squared area around your house/mansion/castle, and then having that map visible on a huge wall. Just a few thoughts.
The 'Map Book' is an excellent idea, that would be very efficient in mapping your world and would fix a lot of things that I have issues with. I agree that the way it is now is unique, but it could be better.
Posting a 3x3 map on a wall to show off your empire? That would be fantastic, and awesome. It would also create a more realistic environment when making a very large, multi-town/city world, that as you travel from town to town each would show a unique map. From each unique map could tell you where you need to go, where resources are, etc. With the 'Map Book' idea, you could then collect all of those local maps and viola! A easy, fast way to map out the world.
It would also be a neat idea to be able to put markers on the maps themselves to remind you of resources, areas of interest, etc.
Definitely support. Improved mapping is something that's desperately needed and would give me more of an incentive to explore the far edges of my world.
