Swamps are bleak, awful places to roam with no real resources and you are constantly impeded by water and don't think about boating; lily pads. But, they are swamp-like! That's what's great about them. People don't like swamps in real life, so why like a Minecraft swamp?
So, to put the proverbial cherry on top, I say we add an alligator. Identical to a zombie on land, but in water it can swim double your sprint speed. I'm talking Enderman scary, and looking at it doesn't make it stop. But, you hop out of water and smack it and you're fine. They will also spawn like squid(night AND day).
It should drop "alligator skin" instead with a unique armor texture and stuff (though books crafted with it remain the same as leather-bound books).
Personally, even if alligators were added I would never go in to a swamp unless I needed bookcases. They're THAT ugly.
I mean, real swamps are ugly. I find swamps extremely useful as they often surround isolated jungle areas. Very hard to traverse and an excellent use of natural diversion. Like you, most people see swamp and turn 90 degrees.
I'm not down for another set of leather armor. It's useless enough as is. The main point was the leather for books and experience. Often times cows are killed off in an area. Since alligators would be an aggressive mob, they would respawn, in the day as well. Forgot to mention that in the original.
I think there's already a post with this… sorry to tell.
There are a ton of posts on how crappy the swamps are but this is specifically about alligators. I did a forum search and didn't come up with anything.
Real swamps generally keep the same soil type throughout the biome (maybe a small transition in clay/sand/loam%). Minecraft swamps have pure sand and clay right next to eachother (and dirt, too).
Real swamps have murky water that stays murky. A river that cuts through a swamp have pure, clean water that turns murky within three meters, along with oceans.
Real swamps have normal grass (though it's long). Minecraft swamps have grass mixed with sludge.
I'm sorry, but Minecraft swamps are not like real swamps. I'd rather see the look of swamps (and underwater geology for that matter) change than a new mob to keep me even further away from swamps.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
Just because they are not physically identical doesn't mean that the premise of the swamp is not the same. I'm not trying to argue about swamps, I think they're fine looking for Minecraft.
The gameplay value of adding the aforementioned alligator mob would be tremendous.

And, it can't be tamed.
Make it drop leather, because books.

They have a model finished.
Also lily pads are fixed in the next update.
