I had a slightly realistic idea for minecraft.
I'm sure you guys know that mining a block of stone gives you a block of cobblestone.
So anyway my idea was (drum roll please) that if you mine a block of stone you get 4 things called rocks with maybe a modified flint texture , so if you put 4 rocks on a crafting grid you make a block of cobblestone
Please support!

Ummm... Why would we want extra work for ourselves?
It would make the first mining trip in a new world absolutely awful because we would not be able to start building our shelter quickly enough. It is just extra work that no one will appreciate.
This is kinda like my problem with the current snow mining mechanic. snowballs suck. Packing them together all the time is even worse. It's kinda like if they decided to make sand blocks only mine-able with buckets. Realism is not always a good thing.
I gotta say, I'm not a fan of make-work ideas. The only thing your idea does is put step between mining and placement of cobblestone, which, quite honestly, shouldn't be there, especially if it wastes an item slot.
Would stones be able to do something interesting? I can't imagine what they could possibly do that's at all interesting. Replace cobblestone in crafting recipes? Drastically upset game balance. Throw them at mobs? Again, upset balance.
As presented, I don't support this.

Are you always so pessimistic?
Yes, yes I am. A pessimist is always either right, or pleasantly surprised.

It would add an extra layer to the game I mean cobblestone has a cracked type of texture yet it's the goddamm size as a block of stone.
Makes.No.Sense.

Not everything has to make sense, you know. Besides, it actually does make sense: Being that the cobblestone is mined from stone, it's not unreasonable to imagine that they'd both have approximately the same volume/mass. You're just taking the broken pieces of stone and placing them back together in the shape of a block (and you shouldn't need to craft to do that).
And rocks wouldn't make much sense, if you're using the "sense" argument. 4 stray stones make an entire block of cobble?

Well the idea about throwing them at mobs is a good idea but perhaps making a slingshot to fire them might make more sense.
As well as that I like the suggestion about using them for crafting.
Idea for sling shot recipe: 1 stick at the bottom and string in a bucket shape at the top.

Even if you do have to make a slingshot, there's still the fact that the stones are an infinite source of ammunition. If their damage is too high, you've got some drastically-game balance, because nobody would use bows. If their damage is too low, nobody would give enough of a crap to bother using them. And, to be honest, I don't really think there's a "just right" amount of damage for them to do.
And in regards to replacing cobble in crafting: The problem, here, is that doing so makes tool-crafting way too easy. Right now, three cobble makes a pick or an axe. With stones, however, for the same amount of material (plus 6 more sticks) I can make four. Now, I don't know about you, but I don't think a person should be able to craft themselves a set of tools with only 3 cobble blocks.

1 Log = 4 planks = 1 crafting bench, all the same size.
You can swim up waterfalls.
Obsidian, which is roughly as durable as glass, is the 2nd most durable block, surpassed only by bedrock.
Sand and gravel are the only blocks affected by gravity.
The list goes on.
And yes, adding an unneeded step is just... well... unneeded.
Also, you argue that it makes no sense that mining a stone block gives you cobblestone of the same mass... no, that makes perfect sense, and it dropping 4 rocks, which is the same amount needed to make cobblestone, is the same thing, so you just contradicted yourself...

Note that I said stones could replace cobblestone in crafting and about the stones for ammunition they would do a bit less damage than bows I mean, it's a rock not a freaking arrow. God. (exasperated sigh)

And i was pointing out why replacing cobblestone is not a good idea, regardless of whether you were seriously considering it or not. I also explained why stone ammunition is not an easy thing to balance.
Please don't get so defensive. It's a forum, and this is why your idea is here: To get critique from others. You're getting critique; everything is happening as it should.

Retired StaffI wouldn't use that argument in Minecraft.
