Now I was just wondering around a jungle when I ticked off an Enderman. I was already being chased by numerous monsters and when the Enderman teleported and killed me I lost all my stuff. By the time I got back it had all dissapeared. If blocks can float in Minecraft why cant some items sit on the ground for a while? I have also lost some loot undergrond. I just think its unesecary. And the same goes for arrows. They just fade away. Wouldn't it be cool to rediscover the battleground between you and a Skeleton? I also think you should be able to pick up all arrows. Just a suggestion.
Dropped items disapearing is for lag, like said above. You have five minutes to find items, that's actually quite a lot of time unless you lose your bed or are miles away from said bed when you were killed. Try to keep backup supplies, or at least, remember where you went.
Inability to pick up arrows is so that players don't just trap a skeleton in a small area and collect infinite arrows.

Although I like an idea that makes it when you carry a chest, all your items will go into it upon death.
Steve is running almost breathlessly through the forest; adding a zig zag motion to his step to avoid the multiple arrows whizzing by at deadly speed. It is night time. The dead of night in fact and Steve is already regretting not getting back home before dark. Suddenly pain explodes in his shoulder as an arrow finally finds its mark. "GAhh!" He cries out in pain but wills himself to keep running. There are lights up ahead. But Steve's excitement is crushed when he realizes its a foreign village, and not his home. Lost, injured, and starving Steve desperately runs to the village at least for temporary shelter. But then a creeper rounds the corner of a house and hisses threateningly. It is far too late however and Steve is unable to heed the warning. The creepers booming scuicide sends Steves soul careening into the abyss.
Then he wakes up in his bed. "Was it all a dream?" Unfortunately not. Steve's heart sinks when he opens his backpack to find it completely empty.

There are several problems here. The first being, why on earth should a chest in your inventory magically place itself and at the same time collect all your items for you?
Secondly, Steve was lost. It would take precious time to go back and find his chest.
I am aware that it is a warnable offense to state that there is a death chest mod. That being said; I am sure we all know there is a mod. The reason there is a mod for it is because it unbalances the game to be able to save all your items after death. Death is an incentive. We avoid it because we know we'll probably lose our items. However if we could get our items back with imputiny every time then people would jump off a cliff to avoid waiting to starve to death and then just go collect their items after respawning. Also creepers wouldn't be so feared and respected. The worst thing they could cause if our items went into a chest is having to fill a hole in the ground/floor/wall.
It's understandable that many people do get upset about lost items, but as many players have said, all sorts of items would be lying around if you couldn't find them again. Therefore, to keep a less lag filled game, Jeb and Notch never added it the pure reason it'd really be a huge lag problem. The problem has been solved, and the answers about lag are truthful, so locked.

Now imagine this happening over, and over, and over again.
Eventually you end up with thousands of items just laying around that cause lag for the player, and can also crash servers.
Plus, if items never decayed, there would be much less of a rush and drive to go get those items back.
Also, this has been suggested before. Use the search bar.

These guys have it correct.
If they didn't, it would be like running 2 Minecrafts at the same time.

…and minecarts. And boats. And paintings. And Ender Crystals. And most projectiles (technically). And players.
