Now, before I get the whole, "We don't need new ores" thing, I am going to point out that this will have a very useful purpose, and not be used for just tools.
Anyways, the new ores will be called Kronite and Viridium, and will both be found in the nether. Kronite is an orange-red metal, where Viridium is a purple gemstone.
When mined with a stone pickaxe or above, Kronite will come out as a few dull orange clumps and will be reffered to as 'Crude Kronite.' This will be about as rare as lapis. This can be refined in a furnace, which will give you bright orange ingots of Kronite. Now, Kronite is native to the Nether, so it behaves very strangely when in the overworld.
1. Kronite Barges: These can be made as you would a regular boat, but with Kronite ingots. These barges have strange properties. Firstly, they sink as twice the speed of players when set in water, but more importantly, they can be used to travel across lava. When getting out of the Kronite Barge while over lava, you will automatically be delivered to the nearest block within 2 blocks to avoid falling into the lava.
2. Kronite Blocks: It's mainly a decorative item crafted with 9 ingots, but it can be used to repel water. Water cannot come within 1 block of it.(including diagonals)
3.Springs: Creating a spring can be made from this flexible metal like so: <Just imagine the gold ingots are Kronite.
These spring do nothing... Unless you craft with them, making this: <The chestplate is the spring <The Shroom is redstone
Now you will get an item called a Spring Platform. It will take up two blocks once placed(much like an extended piston) When stepped on, it retracts. You can walk off of it and it will spring back out. However, it you try jumping off of it, it will send you 4 blocks up and it will extend.(3 blocks from the extended state) Now, this will let you jump over 3 blocks instead of the regular 1 block. You can power the base with redstone to keep it permanently held down, and it will spring up regardless of if there's a player there when the current is cut.
4. Lava/Water Detector: Created like a compass, but instead with the Kronite, this will have a gauge that has a bar with a needle in it. One end is blue, and fades into a red on the other end. The needle will be in the center unless you are within 5 blocks of water or lava, in which case, it will start to move slowly towards it's respective end as you approach it.
This will be useful for miners who might happen to mine the block below them and fall into a hidden pool of lava. Having this with them should be a way to make sure they can prevent this if they are paying attention. The device will start shaking like crazy when you're in lava, but you shouldn't need a gauge to tell you that >_>
MOVING ON!
Viridium can be mined with an iron pickaxe or up, and drops a single purple gem. They are slightly more rare than gold. These are said to be adorned by Pigmen, and is the cause of the zombie pigmen. They are infused with dark energy and are very powerful. Onto the uses:
1: Throwable Weapon: You can throw Viridium gemstones at enemies, and will inflict 6 damage to any player when hit, and will deal 4 splash damage to any player nearby if the gem doesn't explode with dark energy directly on the player.
2: Dark Explosive: Making TNT, but substituting sand with Viridium gems will create a dark purple type TNT that functions the exact same way, except that the explosion is 2.5x larger, and does twice the damage.
3. Magnets: Used in combination with an ender pearl and Kronite, You can make a magnet like so: <The Diamond helmet is the ender pearl <The purple wool is the Viridium
This provides a pull that affects mobs, players, and items. Nearer to the magnet, the pull is strong, but it gets weaker the further you go from it. Powering it with redstone reverses the effect, and propels things away from it.
4. Death Potions: Made with an awkward potion and a Viridium gem. When consumed, you die. It cannot be made into splash potions for obvious reasons.
5. Vile Totems: Crafted with a Viridium gem on top, a stick in the middle, and a plank on the bottom. When placed on the ground (or in your hotbar) it will attract any mobs within 30 blocks towards it. Mobs will try to destroy it, so make sure you either have it guarded. This could be used in mob traps, or when you have several people fighting a horde of mobs and you want to use someone as a meatshield.
Well, writing this has been fun, but I'm waaaaaay too tired to keep this going, so I'm going to leave this as it is, until tomorrow. Tell me what you think!
It's great that we keep getting new things in the overworld, and I know the Nether is like a side thing, but it still needs some sprucing up. New ores would give players incentive to actually mine in the nether other than for glowstone, and would add extra mechanics the the core game. Anywho, I've decided it would be nice if Kronite was slightly more likely to spawn near the top, and Viridium was more likely to spawn near the bottom, so if you're in need of a certain material, it makes it slightly easier to harvest it.
Since player would start to get a lot more Netherrack, so we should get a use for that too. How about Netherrack can be combined with blaze rods to get a tool similar to cobblestone tools, so you can keep getting tools from the nether without ever returning. Kronite tools would be made the same way, with an equivalent to iron. These blaze rods would be harder to obtain than sticks, and Kronite is rarer than iron, so it's kind of a waste of materials. They do however instantly smelt iron and gold ores into ingots when mined.

I don't like the idea of death potions or the water/lava detector, but I like all of these other options! It creates new ores that have real, valuable uses. And having a trampoline entrance to my room would be pretty awesome.
Yeah, I wasn't so sure about the detector thing either. Maybe wearing Kronite armor would be like leather, but it protects you from all fire and lava damage. It does however loose durability VERY quickly if attacked with fire, so it's kind of a back-up plan if you accidentally fall into the lava.
