This is actually a very simple idea. The concept is, that when you attempt to place blocks in open space (at blocks out of range or at the sky) the block will appear in the nearest space available in the direction you are pointing at. So, that way, you can break drops by placing one at your feet or create floating things without having to make an annoying "post" to put the block on. However, breaking a fall will still let you take fall damage, although you may slowly drop a few blocks at a time. Comment!

I haven't even bought MineCraft, I don't have the money...
You can't place blocks in mid-air for a reason. Placing blocks to stop yourself from falling basically makes it so that falling isn't even a threat. It would make exploring caves and ravines too easy. If this were to happen, no cliff edge, ravine, or mountain pass would be an obstacle.
He basically means that, because when you place a block in thin air it'll place itself in the nearest free spot in that direction, you can place a block below you as you fall, and you can build floating structures in the air and ocean without having to start from a solid block (So a pillar, or a piece of the landscape).

Remember, stopping falls with this will still make you take fall damage. It will allow slow, controlled falls, but wandering off a cliff will still kill you.

It won't kill you because you'll be able to stop falling -.-
This would also let you fly. No support whatsoever. Please, don't come on and make a suggestion thread just because you got mad about falling of a cliff. Think your ideas through before posting.
A quick fix might be to disallow placing of mid-air blocks while you are in any sort of vertical downward motion (not that hard to check for), that way you can still walk around and jump upwards to place blocks, but as soon as you start going down, you are unable to place blocks in mid-air.
