While the nether does have much purpose for the things that you can get while in it, it feels incredibly remote. There already is the nether fortress, but it is so big that it gets fused in with the netherrack surrounding it and it can become difficult to get into them and go throughout them safely. Adding in a way to make these safer themselves would take away from the feel of the nether.
So i propose something i call a nether sanctuary. just a small house built into the walls of the nether, the would be as common than an npc village but with the size difference they wouldn't be crowded in the nether. It wouldn't take away from the feeling of being in the nether so that the aspect of danger is still there, but it gives you a sense of knowing that there's something more in the nether to be found that is safe. It would contain:
-A chest with a flint and steel and a map that would apply to the area the sanctuary is in.
-A bed with a blue texture that would allow you to safely sleep in the nether (could despawn ghast's and other hostile mobs around the area)
-Crafting table or furnace for obvious reasons.
The outside material would be nether brick so it would blend in with the surroundings and not stand out so there would not be a cobblestone wall sticking out like a sore thumb. the inside could be any material from the overworld so it would give it that safe haven feeling.
This is just a suggestion for something that could be implemented so that the nether isn't such a hassle to go to.
I like the idea of areas to take a rest, I personally would want them to occur very little so it's a lucky day everytime you find one. Also, have you noticed those who are "out of the water" are basically ignored? Can they not see us or what? Because I posted a long idea two days ago and haven't gotten any replies yet. I'm hoping it'll change now that I'm past that, but just telling you.
This is pretty nice, but the nether is supposed to be a dangerous place, without mercy. Maybe these should be made pretty rare....like strongholds maybe, to keep the danger......And also maps don't work in the nether.
Anyway, any kind of "sanctuary" wouldn't fit the Nether.
This is from the wiki:
"While maps in the Nether work, it has a ceiling, and all that will be shown is red and grey. The only useful function is finding where you are in relation to where you made the map. Additionally, the direction indicator rapidly spins and is not a good indicator of direction."
So yea, they work, but they're almost no help.
Probably a nether sanctuary is not that good of an idea......the game isn't that super-hard that you will die if there is no sanctuary (unless you're a noob).
i see what your all getting at, i understand the whole danger feel of the nether but i think it would help the people who constantly get screwed over, so making it more rare would help and not ruin the feel of it. im just throwing ideas out there cause the nether could be more interesting

So I'm not sure about the idea in general, but you touched on a subject that gave me an idea. what if maps always show portals regardless of if they are underground? Just one little purple dot to stand out. That would make maps in the nether actually worth something.

that and they could show you where a previously discovered fortress was, in case you get lost or simply cant find it again
