After reading some descriptions of multiplayer RPG servers out there (360), and based on my past experience in MMOs, it'd be really handy to be able to restrict/expand voice chat to different "groups". For example, if you're actually grouped-up with other players, in a building with others, in the same town, etc. Maybe based on distance in blocks? Or, perhaps just channels you can subscribe to.
Two points - One, I originally posted this for Minecraft 360 - So, there are no plugins or mods. I played the normal version, but there's just something rad about kicking back on your couch and playing on the big-screen... So, this suggestion is really geared toward Minecraft 360. Second, I'm not sure how it would be implemented. The idea came from a "wild west" themed, RP server. I suggested that I'd tell ghost stories once a week in some sort of ampitheater and it got me thinking... How do I keep the players who aren't in the area from hearing my story? Oh, I can't. So, I thought it'd be cool if there was a way to /join GhostStories and just hear it if you wanted. Or, perhaps everyone within a certain block-radius picked up on the chat channel. Maybe like in real life, where if you're more than say 100' away from a person, the volume diminishes. Just a thought. There might be someone mining up in the NW area of the map who has no business hearing my chat by the campfire in the SE of the map. That's my point.

He doesn't want it as a plugin. I like the idea of area-based chatting. You know, for secret conversations.
