As it is now vines can grow to they hit something. And if the thing that the vines grow from are high over the ground they will grow downwards and to the sides. I don't got any problems with that it grow downwards, What I think should be fixed is that they only stop growing downwards wen they crash in something.
to say it on another way: Your floating island look like **** with all these wines...
And it isn't relay realistic with vines growing miles downwards, (if not climbing on something) the gravity would ripe them apart after they have reached a specific length. So I thin they should stop after like 8-12 blocks, and all should stop at the same length, since that would looks stupid to.
I kinda like the look of that screen shot...
It is an opinion.
And that wouldn't be miles.
What you have there... is feet.
Last thing, vines in real life are a lot stronger than your giving them credit for.
Not saying it could hang off itself forever, but realize its not that thin.
I though of a way the mechanics could be done, similar to water and lava. When you place a vine, it has a different texture from other vines because it's a "Source Vine Block". It will grow to a certain length. If you want it to stop growing, snip it off at the desired length and it won't grow past that. If you want it to grow again, remove and replace the source vine block.
Also, clean up the OP, we aren't visually impaired, we can read regular text just fine.
And that wouldn't be miles.

Minecraft is metric, for starters. Secondly, your really going to complain about his measurements? He wasn't giving a precise number, he was make the generalization "These vines grow too damn long".

hmm. that sound like a nice way to regular how long u want you vines
I like how far vines fall, And Gravity Wouldn't Rip Them Apart? .. Also When has minecraft agreed with physics? + That screenshot looks good with the low vines :S
in free fall it would after a specific length, if it's climbing on something it can go over 3,000 feet...
added a new pic, u cant seriously mean that it looks good with all these wines? (on the new pic)
