I think trees are a little sad in Minecraft. They are okay at first, but in the long run, they're just wooden posts
with leaves on top! So I think they need sprucing up (no pun intended) with branch blocks.
Branches should be fence-sized logs growing out of trees around where the leaves start, which grow about two blocks from the trunk. They should also get randomly angled from their origin, so trees will look very natural with and without their leaves. __ Here the branches start off horizontal, but then point upwards at 45 degrees. In contrast, branches will also start off at other angles and then change to horizontal.
= Branch = Wood
Speaking of leaves, Branches should grow right through leaves, as apposed to replacing them and leaving the tree bare of vegetation. Branches should drop 0-2 sticks, so they don't make trees have excessive yield.
Their are already trees with branches. Go bonemeal about 20 saplings and you will be bound to get one. Some people refer to them as "Jipsy Trees" I Refer to them as "Giant as mo-fo trees"
Big trees do have branches, yes, but they are just wood blocks and they wouldn't work for small trees.
Small trees don't need branches. They are meant to look blocky because they are blocks. Welcome to the premise of Minecraft. You generally only really ever find blocks that don't follow this convention in crafting and man made objects.
