So, the Nether is... lackluster. Aside from a fireplace, glowstone, and brewing, it's pointless and dangerous. Pointlessly dangerous, one might say. It needs... something. Let's look at those new fortresses (a step in the right direction). Who built them? What do they look like? And are they still there? To make the Nether a little more exciting to enter, I'm suggesting Nether Villages.
For my addition, it's got a few things necessary for it; new mobs, new blocks, new items, and new structures.
Mobs (All completely fireproof and lavaproof)
For starters, Testificates... err, I mean Squidwards... I mean Villagers, won't work in the Nether. Why? They just don't... fit. They don't look like they belong. So, perhaps some kind of pigmen or daemons would work better. Also, they can trade with you for regular Nether things like Nether Brick, Nether Fence, Glowstone, Soul Sand, gravel, Nether Wood (later), Nether Saplings (later), gold nuggets, Blaze Powder, Nether Wart, etc. They have no interest in your weird emeralds. They prefer something more familiar to them; Crystal Fire (later). The Daemons/Villagers would be neutral to you, not afraid to kill you with their Crystal Fire swords, Golems, and their DAMN BARE HANDS! (insert Saxton Hale line here).
Next, an Iron Golem equivalent. It could be gold, since Zombie Pigmen drop gold nuggets, but gold is weak; no good against ghasts, blazes and the like. So, it could be either a big, buff daemons (think Schwarzenegger or Stalone) or a Fire Golem (think a cross between Magma cubes, Blazes and Iron Golems). They get kinda pissed when you hit a villager, so don't
Nether Wolves (Hellhounds). What village is complete without a dog (I think Testificates should have dogs, but whatever)? These little pups would look like wolves, but reskinned with reddish fur and maybe horns and a spiked tail. They wouldn't go through portals, though. They're not interested in your pitiful skeleton bones, though! They prefer blaze rods. They can swim in lava just fine (they even seem to like it). They will protect the villagers when you hit them and will go hunt other monsters for you (but, since this is the Nether, mostly Magma Cubes, Blazes, and Zombie Pigmen).
Blocks
Nether Wood; like regular wood, but hellish! Grows from Nether Saplings and grows like regular trees, instead using Blaze Powder as fertilizer, and can grow on the surface. They can only grow on Soul Sand and can be found randomly around the Nether. Also completely fireproof, allowing you to use if for all sorts of things involving lava. However, if it touches water, it breaks. It can be used in many ways like regular wood; planks, tools, boats (later), stairs, crafting tables (function the same, but look different), etc.
Crystal Fire ore; they function like emeralds to the Nether Villagers, but you can use them in crafting! So, if you have enough riches in your world, you can make some nice armour.
Nether Furnaces; made out of Nether Brick and can use fuels more efficiently, like coal smelts 10 or something like that.
Nether Chests; made of the finest (read; any scrap lying around) Nether Wood, they can be found in Nether Fortresses or in the villages.
Items
Nether Saplings; Nether Tree saplings. They can be found by breaking leaves off a Nether Tree or bought from a Daemon/villager (however, trees can't be found randomly in the Nether; you have to buy a sapling first or find it in a chest) However, some people don't want Nether Trees; so, maybe they can't grow in the Nether, but only on the surface?
Crystal Fire tools; they don't like regular sticks. Why? Because the sticks would just burn! You have to use Nether Sticks from Nether Wood. Using Crystal Fire tools and armour has benefits; a few basic enchantments. CF swords have a basic Fire Aspect enchantment, armour has Fire Protection I on them, etc. A full suit would make you nigh-fireproof, only taking minor damage from fire and lava (don't try swimming in lava, though, it would still hurt). They have the durability of stone and the speed of Diamond, including the ability to mine obsidian (since they have less durability, though, Diamond is still preferable).
Nether Boats; Because boats in MC are awesome, aren't they However, these reddish hell-dinghies protect you from the rather dangerous lava, floating over them like it was water. Just don't break them when floating! In order to prevent you from dying horribly, these can climb onto netherrack of the same level so you can safely disembark.
Structures
The villages themselves. Now, the reason our worlds are a little more... flat is because of villages on the surface. I don't want the Nether to be that flat, so instead the villages could have three options; be a lot smaller, build only on a plateau, or build some sort of scaffolding. I prefer the third option, but the other two could work as well. Nether villages could be made out of either Nether Wood and Netherrack, like surface villages, or Nether Brick. The well is full of lava and the blacksmith has lava and has a Nether Furnace in it.
So, that's that! Please tell me what you think of this and post and suggestions and/or improvements to my thread as this could be considered a rough draft.
Sorry, I like the idea of nether villages, but not how you suggested them. Nether Villages should be hostile to you, not other mobs, so the "fire golem" would be unnecessary. I think that adding a new tier of tools is useless, the iron-diamond gap is fine as is. The fire-resistant armour is a cool idea. You didn't really expand on anything, like for example, I think the fire-proof wood has potential, especially if you could make a lava-proof boat, but what would it look like? How would it work/grow? Just having trees in the nether looks wrong. Hellhounds also have potential, but are unexplained. Do they protect the villagers? Are they hostile?
Maybe expand more on a few ideas, and concentrate on one or two new features rather than a large number of new ones with little to no explaination. Hope that helped =)
Perhaps they're neutral, but mischievous? I.e. they'll trade with you, but rip you off. They could randomly steal surface materials you have built with there, they could randomly... do rather troll-like things, etc.
Also, I justify the Fire Golem by saying that some creatures in the Nether don't seem too bright (Magma Cubes and the like) and the Daemons/Villagers would like some protection. Or they could have made them just to **** you off
What if the 'trees' were rather short, giving them more of a bush-like appearance? Or maybe they only come from the Villagers so they don't ruin the aesthetic.
OK, so more detail on some things. Got it.
Thank you so much on the input! I'll be sure to alter my post to make it better!
Personally, I think that adding a new tier of tools/armour would be really cool. It doesn't have to perform better or worse than any of the already existing tiers. It would be nice if they introduced an obsidian tier.
No Nether wood! Why does everybody wants to put trees everywhere? The Nether is HELL! There shouldn't grow any trees in hell!
Well, the Nether Wood is optional; you don't have to but/plant the saplings. Or maybe you could get the saplings in the Nether, but they only grow on the surface? Hmmm...

Well, I wanted to give some incentive to use them and make them unique; plus I had to balance out the enchantments somehow.
