Instead of having the achievements on the game, it should be on the www.minecraft.net website on profile. The achievements should also be public to other users to look at. The reason for this, is because when a new Test is out, or just simply you lost the files on your computer, you basically loose all your achievements making it not even worth getting for, because your just going to loose them every step of the way. Unless it is put on the website.
Agreed. I support this. However i don't think there's enough challenging achievements that would make showing them off to your friends that necessary. Your idea plus more achievements = YES!

That i also had in mind, but thank you for sharing. ^.^

Your only a real gamer if you love to play games, and respect other people, and there opinions.
You know, I always wondered why they can't be stored on the site.
As for your idea, I'm okay either way. I don't really care for Achievements and Notch said in an interview that he implemented Achievements in the first place to act like tutorials rather than bragging rights rewards. Since Jeb has taken over, he might go for the "bragging rights" direction that would appeal to those kind of people but I don't know Jeb so yeah.
I really like this idea and hope they bring it in along with the profile name changing.
And to build on that, they could add a profile page that shows ours skins, stats and previously used servers. (unless im dumb and they have that already)
yes a lot is going to change now that Jeb has taken over, he was the one who has been more enthusiastic about letting the community drive the future of minecraft via mods, which is why he has gone to the efforts of hiring the bukkit team to help do just that.

That is correct, Notch originally did not have any plans of creating any form of 'bragging right' features of minecraft, but now it is all jeb and no notch. So look out world! things are changing!
Given the type of achievements in the game, and the general difficulty recognizing non-generated structures, any public achievements wouldn't have any authenticity to them. And with the ability to switch game modes, even something as difficult as killing the Ender Dragon could be cheated by setting up for the fight in another mode, then rebooting the game into SSP/SMP.
Mined X block/ore? Can be cheated through a map set up.
Kill X monsters? Mob grinders and traps are not difficult to build.
Do X anything.... get someone's map with the right setup
The ability to easily modify the terrain, and the game rules, makes it impossible to establish global achievements without legitimately easy ways of farming them. Securing it would also be a pointless endeavor, since the system would have to smart enough to read the map for every potential set up a player can make.
