i was just playing the recent snapshot and i came up with a few thoughts on Achievements and possible how to make them more than just a simple drop-down telling you the achievement, Tell me what you guys think!
1. New Achievements!
Add some incentive to trying out the various new things the latest snapshots (and 1.3) have to offer!
1.1 - Bartering Achievements!
Be rewarded for finding and taking advantage of NPC trade!
"Bartering!" You receive this achievement when you first trade emeralds (giving or receiving) with a villager
"Prospective Barter!" - Received when you trade (give or receive) 50 Emeralds
"Corporate Barter!" - Received when you trade (giving or receiving) 100 Emeralds!
"Tycoon!" - Received when you trade (give or receive) 1,000 Emeralds!
1.2 - Exploration Achievements!
Be rewarded for going out and exploring!
(Note: one of the achievements Implements a new block to the desert pyramid)
"Indiana Jones!" - you Receive this achievement when you break a prism in the chest room of the desert pyramid*
"Aztec" - Received when you first harvest a Cocoa Pod
"Christopher Columbus" - Received when you travel over 1km in one direction (ocean) on a boat
"The Sherpa" - Received when you climb a mountain that is over 120 (or more) blocks high. Must be in an "Extreme Hills" Biome
"Dungeon Crawler" - Received when you first break a naturally generated Spawner
"Dungeon Master" - Received when you break 50 naturally generated Spawners
*Uses a green version of the Ender Dragon's healing prisms in the End. Drops an Emerald Prism and is worth 5 Emerald Blocks (Can be crafted, Recipe inside Spoiler)
1.3 - Miscellaneous Achievements!
Get rewarded for discovering and utilizing the various things Minecraft has to offer!
"Aspiring Author" - Received when you first write a book
"Convenience" - Received when you first place a Dispenser
"Comfort Seeker" - Received when you first place a Bed
"Let there be light!" - Received when you first place a Redstone Lamp
"Cloud Storage!" - Received when you first place an Ender Chest
Much more can be added!
2. Achievement Rewards!
Makes the achievement more than just a congratulatory message
For each achievement you are awarded a small amount of exp. (eg "Taking Inventory", "Getting Wood" or "Benchmarking" could yield you 5 exp whereas the more difficult achievements would yield you more exp depending on the difficulty)
for some of the newly introduced Achievements mentioned above and some vanilla Achievements there could be item rewards too! (i.e "Bartering!" could give 5 exp and 5 Emeralds)
Much more ideas could be added! Leave a comment on what you think and if you have any further suggestions post them and ill add them if they seem realistic or balanced!
Minecraft does need more acheivements. But Notch himself said that acheivements are more of a tutorial for new players rather than an actual achivement system, but I can't complain about your suggestions.
I can complain however, about the addition of rewards. Rewards for achivements would just cause minecraft to become another grinding and boring game for those people who want extra rewards, and would just become an easy source of income for a player if they gave emeralds, for example. A small amount of exp, yes. But items? No, no, no.
I see your point. while it is true, it could be toned down to very menial things. They added the starting chest which in my opinion was spoon-feeding just a little

Kudos to you sir but to be honest I would like to see the "Sniper Duel" achievement fixed before any other achievement changes. To the best of my knowledge it is impossible under any and all circumstances.
