It seems like it doesn't take too long to reach bedrock level.
The rest of the sentence is actually "when you did straight down", you just cut it off.
Simply;
It would more than likely cause lag, if not for better computers then for the older computers making up a good portion of the community.
It's incredibly unneeded; we don't need new ores for diamond +1, so if you just want more iron or gold, dig sideways. The world is infinite on the X and Z axis.

Actually, the world is not infinite on the X and Z axis. It stretches out very far, but it is limited. It's about 1,000,000,000 blocks from spawn when the world ends.

I was actually under the impression that it is impossible to reach the "edge" of a Minecraft world but even if one did reach it they would just walk over to the other side, as if the Minecraft world was round (obviously its not round).

You have a good point, thank you for taking the time to read my idea and reply.

No. You just lag extremely and you cant play. The blocks past that zone you can move through, meaning if it didnt lag too much (immposible) you would fall through the ground.

In Infdev, Alpha and Beta maps are somewhat infinitely big - They are made up of chunks; this means that as the player explores the map distant chunks are generated automatically, leading to theoretically infinite maps. In practice, technical reasons (the limits of 32-bit math[1]) force the maximum map size, including the Far Lands, to be around 9.3 million times the surface area of Earth[1], which comes out to about 4.7 quadrillion km2 (The hard limit where chunks are overwritten is at X/Z of ±34,359,738,368, making the world at most 68,719,476,736 meters wide and long, which is about 4,722,366,482,869,645 km2.
Doesn't really matter, to be blunt. You aren't going to run out of space any time soon.

I would like to see the hight level stay the same but the depth of how far down we can mine from sea level increased.
