Firstly, I'd like to state that because this idea is simple yet interesting and also inside the context of the game it has been posted before. However, I am still posting it because I may have different things to say then other people would.
I would like to see more variety in weapons specifically dealing with melee combat. I have read the minecraft wiki so I know that all tools with the exception of the hoe deal melee damage and also lose durability because of it. However, I feel confident in saying most minecrafters only use tools in an emergency.
Obviously we have three ways to fight in minecraft.
Melee: fists, swords, tools, and commanding wolves
Ranged: bow and arrows
Mage: throwing potions/drinking potions
However, even with enchantments there is not much melee variety as wolves will attack anything that tries to attack us, and fists are incredibly inefficient except in extreme emergencies. I would like to see the additon of at least a couple different melee weapons that are unique and are balanced out. For example, if a battle axe were added it could be heavier and therefor swung slower but deal more average and critical damage. If a spear were added it would be weaker but have more range.
I understand there are mods for this, I would like to see more weapon variety incorporated into vanilla minecraft.
OP, you ahve given us no material to work with when it comes to this topic. All you suggest is that we need more weapon variety and suggest no actual weapons. Although your post is more then just the average "LULZ MORE WEEPONZ PLZ NOTCH", you still have given no weapons to think about, apart from the boring -X +Y Battleaxe.
And its not like the mobs accommodate special tactics (aside from your friendly neighborhood creeper). Something like this would best be approached through a mod, and later absorbed into vanilla once theres a complete system to copy from.
If you look at Terraria, it has a nice set of weapons, but it also has a large variety of monsters to fight against. The 2D aspect also makes weapon/monster design a lot easier in light of the unstable terrain.

Also, pvp on servers would become that much more interesting if even two different weapons were added to Minecraft, each weapon obviously having its own statistics, pros, and cons would allow for more personalized combat style and less predictability.

I was just talking about PvP in a new game modes thread. That's what caught my eye. New weapons kind of seems like a good idea. Bash skeleton's sturdy bones easier with a hammer, or split a spider's massive exoskeleton with a battle-ax. Now, I'm not saying add those specifics, but I mean there's always the RIGHT tool for the job. seems to me like hacking at everything with a sword just magically works. Even then, in PvP, you could use the new weapons kind of like a rock paper scissors thing? I know you see that a lot, but it's always a fun system. Adds strategy into the mix. Say a sword trying to block would stand no chance against a battle ax's clean but brutal blow, while the hammer's hefty weight can't compete against the quick strikes of the sword.
I don't know. It makes sense in my head, you know? It would add a lot to minecraft, but at the same time, a lot of people would say that it would make minecraft less original. Unless that's just me.

The only thing close to that that I can see working is maybe a crossbow.. that would be pretty sweet in my opinion.
And yeah a battle axe would be pretty awesome, especially if you could somehow dual wield with it.
