...Well your "rubber" idea is ripped straight from a mod -- so good on that.
Second, you wouldn't use "Leather" as a string. If anything you'd use it to help reinforce the connections of the bow and possibly to help yourself secure a more comfortable grip.
There is really no point in making bow suggestions, because they don't make sense, ever. Especially since you already said how long they last, no one walks around with 12 stacks of 64 arrows and thinks "CRAP! MY BOW BROKE ON MY 16 HOUR WALK THROUGH THE WORLD! WHAT AM I GOING TO DO?!"
Unless you're me playing with the YogsBox mod currently and having a 20 foot stone man hit you so hard you fly off the top of a tower 200 blocks to your death.
hmm, no. It's not really balanced. i would find it annoying in some worlds due to it being difficult to find cows some times. could be used as a mod, i guess.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
if i behave weird in my post; it's not that i am weird actually. I like to pretend being weird just for the satisfaction of me and to make the community feel more normal. herpy herpy derp. btw, comic sans.

Difficult to find cows?
You playing on beta 1.6 still by any chance? Because if I recall, cows have the highest spawn rate currently, and i'v never been able to walk more than 1 minute without finding a group of atleast 6.

Leather Bow
Instead of starting with the normal bow we are used to, you start with a leather bow.
To start making a leather bow, you must first get leather string. You do so by doing this-
This gets you leather string.
Then you make the average bow, but with leather string in place of normal string.
Leather bows have 192 durbality, half of the normal bow, which lasts 3 stacks of 64 arrows.
Normal Bow
String, instead of being obtained by killing spiders normally, you have to kill them with the leather bow- otherwise they drop spider eyes.
Rubber Bow
Rubber can be obtained when you use a bucket on a tree. This gets you rubber.
Once again, when used in the average recipe with rubber replacing string, you get a rubber bow.
Rubber Bows have 768 durability, double the normal bow, which lasts 12 stacks of 64 arrows.

The game can't recognize that you killed a mob with the leather bow unless you literally punch it to death with the bow.
I'v done this on ocassion.. worst decision ever was to stop zombies from dropping feathers
I miss them as well....
When all else fails, blunt trauma prevails.
Unless you're me playing with the YogsBox mod currently and having a 20 foot stone man hit you so hard you fly off the top of a tower 200 blocks to your death.
Then blunt trauma does NOTHING for you lol.

I can only find sheep.
