A suggestion for a change how maps work, making them easier to use and a more important part of an adventure-based game.
1: a bug needs to be fixed. Sometimes the pointer points diagonally when moving in a cardinal direction. This is confusing.
2: spawn point of new worlds will now always be 0,0. If there's an ocean or a lake there, a small island will spawn for you to start out on.
3: any maps crafted will be tied to the same region, not to the place where you crafted them. A 'region' is the area of the map, which is 64x64 chunks = 1024x1024 blocks. As long as you create a map anywhere within that region, the created map will show that region. When you craft a map, the place where you crafted the map will not be automatically the center of the map.
That means that if you, for example: craft a map at 0,510 and one at 0,-510, both will show the same map, as the player is still in the same map region when he creates the two maps. Obviously, a new region starts when the old region ends.
For players making multiple maps, this is especially useful, as now they can just make a new map when they "fall off" the old map, and appear at the border of the newly created map. Right now, the system is that if you create a new map when you fall off the border, the new map will overlap with the old one (and not even auto-update with areas you already explored of the old map). Of course this can be avoided by making sure the new map is created exacly 1024 blocks away from where the old map was created, but this is counter-intuitive.
4: maps should be able to be renamed for easy identification. Useful if you're a multi-mapper.
5: maps will update as long as they are within your item bar.
Creative mode should have all maps automatically fully explored, or there needs to be a cheat code added for a map exploration update.
6: maps should be able to be put on blocks like paintings. This can be done by combining the map with a painting. The map will then just act like a normal painting, it can also be broken down and placed elsewhere. I don't think the map could be updated after that then. Much like after signing a book&quill.
This will make maps really useful as a minecraft feature
*Claps* Wonderful thoughtout idea. Althought I think number 6 should be changed to any map, not just fully explored ones. Maps can go out of date, and map, explored or not, would still be the same item.

le wild bump appears!
A new thought struck me. Perhaps the ability to place waypoints on the map (by pinpoints) would be useful. They then show up as circles on the map. Easy if you are exploring and would like to remember certain interesting spots.
