I was thinking they could add redstone power lines and have towns (basically bigger villages) that are powered by them. Maybe have powered lights that could be mounted on the ceiling. Also it would be cool to have jobs in the towns that you could sign up for. Such as a miner or builder. And once you've done enough work for the town they will build you a house. Thoughts on all this?
A lighting solution would be worth discussing, especially since torches are hard to ceiling mount, and redstone torches don't give off much light.
But the job idea is just an underwhelming quest system, and that doesn't really work well when you can heavily modify the environment. The trade system can sort of fill the basics... but notice that it doesn't necessitate the player to do a specific task to be tracked, and instead just requires them to hand over the results of an implied task.

Redstone Lamps...
Dig them holes.
